A Play For Ireland wanted - calling all budding playwrights
Do you have an idea for a play that demands to be staged? One that says something about Ireland right now? Well this might just be your lucky day...
Fishamble: The New Play Company have launched their A Play For Ireland initiative - they're looking for an idea for a big, ambitious play, one that, in their words 'bursts with humanity and tackles a subject about which the playwright feels passionate'.
The goal? To find new theatrical voices who can capture the zeitgeist of Ireland today.
Fishamble have won acclaim by staging contemporary theatre from emerging Irish talent, along with urgent, timely work from noteworthy artistic voices; recent productions have included Sebastian Barry's On Blueberry Hill, and writer-performer Pat Kinevane's award-winning trilogy of one-man plays, Forgotten, Underneath and Silent. In the pipeline for 2018 are collaborations with The Abbey Theatre on Haughey/Gregory, the latest documentary play recreating real-life events by Colm Murphy, and Rathmines Road, a provocative work about personal and collective responsibility by Deirdre Kinehan.
Today we also launch our 30th year programme coming up in 2018! We are proud to present 3 new plays and 5 touring productions, telling the stories of Ireland through daring and fearless voices. #Fishamble30 https://t.co/M9zp8ozNzl pic.twitter.com/uIMkcbksDF— Fishamble (@Fishamble) December 5, 2017
A Play For Ireland is designed as a two-year process, one intended to encourage the citizens of Ireland (and non-Irish citizens resident here) to write plays aimed at engaging audiences aged 18+. The initiative is run in partnership with six venues nationwide, in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Belfast; the Pavilion and Draíocht in Dublin, the Everyman in Cork, the Lime Tree Theatre/Belltable in Limerick, Town Hall Theatre, Galway and Lyric Theatre Belfast. 5 writers will be chosen to take part in the initiative at each venue, making a total of 30 playwrights, to mark Fishamble’s 30th birthday, in 2018 - from those playwrights, one will be chosen to have their work produced by the company.
Submissions to A Play For Ireland are now open, and close on Thursday 1st February, 2018. Find out more here.
