The ESB is on standby for any power outages

Plans have been put in place in various counties ahead of Hurricane Ophelia's arrival tomorrow.

Council officials have been working throughout today to plan for possible wind and flood damage.

In Waterford, outdoor crews have been told to come in early tomorrow and will be mobilised according to needs. 

Upwards of 200 staff will be deployed if the situation becomes critical.

The Council's Emergency Coordination Team (ECT) is due to meet at 7am tomorrow in Waterford city to assess how the storm has progressed overnight and in the morning and decide on what response is needed.

Head of the team is Fergus Gavin, who said all eventualities are being planned for.

Flood barriers on the quay in Waterford and Passage East in the county have been checked and they will be deployed and closed if a storm surge happens.

High tide in Waterford and south Wexford is due between 3-4pm tomorrow.

Many primary and secondary schools in Waterford and Tipperary have sent messages to parents that they will not open tomorrow.

In Kilkenny, council officials have been planning their response to possible storm and wind damage and some schools have already said they will not open tomorrow.

In Wexford, many schools will be closed tomorrow and some day care centres for the elderly are being shut. 

Council officials across the county have informed staff to prepare for every eventuality but say it is too early to say at this stage if the storm will hit the county. Hundreds of staff are on standby if needed.

Gardaí across the region are working closely on emergency plans with council officials.

The ESB said it is at 'Red Weather Preparedness Level' ahead of any possible power outages during the storm.

It said crews will be dispatched to any affected areas without electricity supply, making the electricity network safe and assessing the damage, so that they can restore power as quickly and effectively as possible.
