Mad hatter TJ Miller

He may play a "meh" emoji in the upcoming Emoji Movie but US comedian TJ Miller is definitely "yay!" about Irish comedy.

Ahead of his appearance at the Vodafone Comedy Festival, where he will play all four nights, Miller has said that he learnt a lot from Irish stand up on his last visit to Ireland.

Speaking to RTÉ Entertainment, the 36-year-old from Denver, Colorado, who also starred in Deadpool, said: "It's been amazing to watch Irish comedians. I was the Kilkenny Cat Laughs festival and I got to see some Irish talent and I actually performed on the bill with Tommy Tiernan and that was tough because he is very much the Elvis Presley of Irish comedy.

"The Irish in general are fairly self-effacing and almost oppressively friendly so you get a lot of self-deprecating humour. Whereas the British talk about other people and embarrassing experiences, the Irish will take the p***, as you all say."

The fast-rising, fast-talking Miller made his name on acclaimed HBO comedy Silicon Valley but made a shock exit from the show earlier this year amid rumours that he was unhappy that the showrunners were not critical enough of President Donald Trump.

"Which is a better way of pitching tom the Resistance? Doing stand up and speaking directly to the audience or being a successful television actor? That's another thing - we need Silicon Valley more than ever now as an ally against this man. I'm not a political comedian but I do need to talk about and deal with what's going on in America.

"So that was part of me leaving the show but I don't expect Silicon Valley to become that political but it will be interesting to see if they incorporate it in the show. Stand up is my best weapon against this administration."
