Milk's Journey - From farm to fridge

We already know that sun and rain helps the grass to grow and this in turn helps the Avonmore dairy herd to produce delicious creamy milk. But what happens after that?

  1. Well firstly cows are milked twice a day, in the morning and again in the evening. The farmer stores all the milk in his big tank on the farm, keeping the milk fresh at below 4 degrees.
  2. Then the Avonmore tanker comes to collect the milk from the farmer. The driver takes a sample of the milk to ensure it is of the highest quality and then he loads up his truck and heads off to the milk plant.

  3. The milk plant is where the milk is first pasteurised, a process which ensures the milk stays at high quality throughout its lifespan, and is always safe to consume. The pasteurisation process involves putting the milk through a heat treatment procedure, at 73 degrees for 25 seconds.
  4. After that the milk is homogenised, which means that the cream in the milk is evenly spread throughout the milk, ensuring its tastes good down to the last drop in the carton.
  5. Once the milk has passed through these stages it is ready to be packed. It is put into cartons and bottles, ready to be sent to the local shops and supermarkets.

  6. Most days Avonmore milk is packed and on shelf in stores within hours, ensuring that when you go in and buy your carton of milk it is as fresh as possible.
