It was 90 degrees in the jungle. They wore woollen vests and ill-fitting boots. Many of them had never been on an aeroplane before. They were not properly armed and were told to use force as a last resort. They were Irish peace-keepers on the front-line.
From July 1960 to May 1964, over 6,000 Irish troops served with the U.N. mission in the Congo. These final two programmes in the “War Stories” series tell some of their incredible stories.
