Not for the first time, US author TC Boyle (The Tortilla Curtain, World's End) examines island life in his novel, San Miguel, a particularly desolate spot off the coast of California. He met up with Sinéad Gleeson (pictured right) on a recent visit to Dublin.

As the Arts Council turns 60, it marks the occasion with a series of exhibitions and four short films commissioned with RTÉ. Two of the three-minute films will be premiered on tonight's show: Variations on a Collection by James Kelly and The Nettle Coat by Pat Collins and Sharon Whooley.
