The Guests

My guests tonight are Peter Sheridan, Nadine O'Regan and Hugh Linehan.

The Film: RED

RED stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich as former CIA agents back in the wars after it becomes very obvious indeed that someone is trying to kill Willis. And so he gets the band back together again, picking up along the way Helen Mirren's retired British assassin and Brian Cox's retired Russian spymaster.

The Play: John Gabriel Borkman

Now on at The Abbey Theatre, John Gabriel Borkman stars Alan Rickman, Lyndsay Duncan and Fiona Shaw in a new version by Frank McGuinness of Ibsen's tale of a wealthy banker once powerful and revered now living in solitude and disgrace after a financial scandal and several years in jail.

The Book: The Empty Family

Colm Toibin's new collection of short stories feature nine tales populated by characters cut off from their own people, their own place and their own histories. The public figure of Lady Gregory tells almost all about her private life in London, a Pakistani immigrant settles in a strange town and an Irishman in Barcelona finds the love that dare not speak its name in 1970s' Ireland.

The Film: Carlos

Directed by Olivier Assayas, Carlos stars Edgar Ramirez as Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, a man better known to the world as Carlos the Jackal. Originally made as a five-hour drama for television, a shorter, three-hour version is about to open at the Irish Film Institute.

The Performance: Tiger Cooke

Tiger Cooke - the artist formerly known as Tadgh -has just released his third album, Fingertips of the Silversmith, a recording with a jazz tinge. Here, with the track, Out of Reach, is Tiger, Colm Querney, Kevin Brady, David Redmond and Darragh O'Kelly.
