The Guests

This week's guests are writer and lecturer Harry Browne, art critic Cristin Leach and The Irish Times Arts Editor Shane Hegarty.

The Film: Life During Wartime

Directed by Todd Solondz, 'Life During Wartime' revisits the quagmire that is the lives of the three Jordan sisters, a family which first appeared in his 1999 movie 'Happiness'. Now, so many years on, and played by completely different actors, the sisters have yet more personal disasters to contend with. Some of these crises are newly arrived, some are simply old nightmares, which have recently mutated, and one in particular is a twisted scenario almost beyond measure. A husband long ago declared dead is just out of jail and now his son must be told the truth - not only is his father still alive, he's a convicted paedophile. 'Life during Wartime' is open at selected cinemas nationwide.

The Play: The Birthday of the Infanta

Now on at Bewley's Cafe Theatre in Dublin, 'The Birthday of the Infanta' is a new adaptation of the Oscar Wilde story. Written and directed by Bairbre Ni Chaoimh, in association with One City One Book, this is a three-hander, starring Natalie Radmall-Quirke, Oscar Hernandez Rodriguez and, in the role of the Spanish princess, Jill Murphy . It's the princess' 12th birthday and among the surprises and amusements arranged for her special day, a young dwarf is brought from the forest to dance for her. To her he is no more than a grotesque novelty designed to make her laugh - but as for him, he is completely smitten by the Infanta and he falls in love. 'The Birthday of the Infanta runs at Bewleys Café Theatre until 8 May'.

The Exhibition: Painting 1994-2010

Now on at the Royal Hibernian Academy, 'Painting 1994 - 2010' is an exhibition of work by Oliver Comerford. The pieces here cover the period of the last 16 years - some 30 paintings - all landscapes all, heavily influenced by both film and photography. In fact some of these paintings began in photographs taken by Comerford himself from the windows of moving cars. 'Painting 1994-2010' is at the RHA until next Sunday.

The Book: Hand In The Fire

'Hand In The Fire' is the latest novel from Hugo Hamilton. When a Serbian carpenter called Vid Cosic befriends a Dun Laoghaire lawyer called Kevin Concannon, he feels that he is finally getting a foothold in Ireland and getting to grips with the nuances of the Irish ways of speaking and of socialising. But Vid's association with the Concannons soon starts to cause him even more problems than those he left behind in Belgrade and he quickly realises that not only does he need a rough guide to Ireland but he also needs a rough guide to friendship, betrayal, murder and hate. 'Hand in the Fire' is published by Fourth Estate.

The Performance: Triúr Sa Draighean

This week we have music from three musicians who need little introduction. Triúr Sa Draighean is a collection of new compositions by Peadar O'Riada, and performing 'Waiting For Connie' are Peadar O Riada, Caoimhin O'Raghallaigh and Martin Hayes.
