The Film: State of Play
Directed by Kevin Macdonald, who made 'The Last King of Scotland', 'State of Play' is a Hollywood remake of Paul Abbot's BBC series - here relocated to the Washington Beltway. Russell Crowe is a hard-boiled investigative journalist working on a case of murder and collusion in the high powered world of the political and corporate elite. And among their number is his friend, an ambitious US Congressman, played by Ben Affleck. 'State of Play' is on general release.
The Film: Endgame
With a cast which includes William Hurt, Jonny Lee Miller and Derek Jacobi, 'Endgame' is a feature-length thriller about the end of Apartheid in South Africa. Directed by Pete Travis, who also directed 'Omagh', the movie is inspired by the secret talks that took place at a time when civil war in South Africa seemed almost certain. The talks involved leading Afrikaners and ANC exiles who met, in secret, in an English country house. 'Endgame' will be shown on Channel 4 on Monday 4 May at 9pm.
The Book: The Immortals
'The Immortals' is the new novel from the Indian writer Amit Chaudhuri. Set in Mumbai, the book tells the stories of three people, their lives and their music. Because this is very much a book about music - both as a valued art and as a commercial commodity. Shyami is the son of a famous singer, and Mallika could have been a successful singer but she's the full-time wife of a businessman. Meanwhile, her son Nirmalya believes that no compromises can ever be made and that, no matter what, you should suffer for your art. 'The Immortals' is published by Picador.
The Play: Moby Dick
One of Ireland's best known touring theatre companies, Gare St Lazare Players is visiting 28 venues nationwide with a one-man show starring Conor Lovett. Directed by Judy Hegarty, the theatre company has taken on the tome considered by many to be the great American novel. 'Moby Dick' follows Captain Ahab on his journey of revenge as he follows the great white whale - the story narrated by a young adventurer called Ishmael. The Performance: Togetherness
Togetherness is a Dublin jazz quartet featuring Justin Carroll, Michael Buckley, Simon Jermyn and Sean Carpio. Despite being familiar faces on the Irish jazz scene for many years, their self-titled album is the quartet's first - with Justin concentrating on the piano as opposed to the Hammond. Tonight they perform for us 'Feelgood Factor'.
