The Film: Water Lilies

Directed by first-time director Celine Sciamma, 'Water Lilies' was a huge hit at last year's Cannes Film Festival. Set in a suburb of Paris, it's the story of a bunch of 15-year-old girls, and in particular Marie, who develops a crush on Floriane. She is the star of the synchronised swimming team and, by all accounts, sexually experienced when it comes to the boys. Floriane allows her awkward admirer to hang around as long as she provides cover so she can sneak off to be with her boyfriend. So basically it's teenage hormones a go-go with all the attendant longing, confusion and cruelty. And it's in French.

The Book: The Butt

Tom, an American coming to end of his holiday, decides to give up smoking and throws the butt of his last cigarette off the balcony of his apartment and badly burns a man below. Tom didn't mean any harm but nevertheless he finds himself trapped within the bizarre systems of the place, and to make reparation he must set off into the badlands. With an English paedophile for company, his adventures begin, encountering along the way a bewildering cast of officials, magicians, tribesmen and violent insurgents. 'Picaresque', you might say, but it is also, according to the publishers Bloomsbury, "an allegorical account of the Western liberal conscience in the aftermath of 9/11".

The Show: Three Atmospheric Studies

'Three Atmospheric Studies' by the Forsythe Company was the headline act at this year's Dublin Dance Festival. Widely recognised as one of the most influential forces in dance, the New Yorker William Forsythe was Director of Ballet Frankfurt for 20 years and formed his own dance company in 2004 with an ensemble of 18 dancers based in Frankfurt and Dresden. This was an Irish premiere, with three shows only, at the Abbey Theatre. Although 'Three Atmospheric Studies' has finished its run, the Dublin Dance Festival runs until the 3 May. You can find all the details at www.dublindancefestival.ie.

The Exhibition: Cut-Outs and Cut-Ups

Now on at the New Galleries at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Kilmainham, 'Cut-Outs and Cut-Ups' is the first joint exhibition of the artwork of two quite iconic, and very different, writers. William Burroughs - a legend even in his lifetime - is best known for 'The Naked Lunch', among other things, and Hans Christian Andersen is best known for stories such as 'The Little Mermaid' and 'The Ugly Duckling'. So what exactly are they are doing together at the Irish Museum of Modern Art? 'Cut-Outs and Cut-Ups' is at the Irish Museum of Modern Art until 29 June.

The Performance: Liam Finn

Liam Finn is a young New Zealander with a famous surname, being the son of Split Enz and Crowded House man Neil Finn. Liam's debut album 'I'll Be Lightning' has gone gold at home and he's in Ireland to play some shows. Tonight he's joined by EJ Barnes to perform 'Second Chance'.
