The Film: Love in the Time of Cholera

Directed by Mike Newell and based on the novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, 'Love in the Time of Cholera' stars Javier Bardem as Florentino, a man who never really knows when to quit. Rejected by his first love Fermina, he nevertheless devotes his entire life to her. In fact he pursues her well into old age and despite the fact she has married a handsome doctor, he never loses hope. There is one distraction, however: he sleeps with just about every beautiful woman who crosses his path. Hundreds of them.

The Drama: The Passion

With Joseph Mawle as Jesus, Paul Nicholls as Judas and James Nesbitt as Pontius Pilate with a James Nesbitt accent, 'The Passion' is a major BBC drama which has been showing throughout Holy Week on BBC 1. Written by Frank Deasy, it's a retelling of the story of Jesus from three different points of view: the Romans, the religious authorities in Jerusalem and Jesus himself.

The Book: Something to Tell You

'Something to Tell You' is the new novel from Hanif Kureishi, the writer best known for novels like 'The Buddha of Suburbia' and movies like 'My Beautiful Laundrette'. Here an analyst called Jamal is at that tricky mid-life stage where he finds that there is much about himself that is uncertain and unresolved. But on top of the usual angst of getting older, he is further burdened by a guilty secret from his youth. But when someone from his past reappears, that secret is suddenly under threat. 'Something to Tell You' is published by Faber & Faber.

The Exhibition: Unique Act

Back in 2006 the artist Sean Scully made a significant gift of a number of his paintings to the Hugh Lane in Dublin. Those paintings are the starting point for the exhibition now on at the Hugh Lane as part of the gallery's centenary. Entitled 'Unique Act' it's a selection of non-figurative paintings by several well known artists from right around the world. 'Unique Act' is at The Hugh Lane until 25 May.

The Performance: Pete Cummins

Pete Cummins has been a fixture on the Irish music scene for a very long time. A member of Granny's Intentions back in the day, he has played with just about everyone along the way. And who can forget the Fleadh Cowboys' Late Night at the Olympia? He has just released a solo album entitled 'The Brilliant Architect' and tonight performs for us the title track.
