The Film: Jindabyne
Directed by Ray Lawrence, 'Jindabyne' stars Gabriel Byrne and Laura Linney in an emotional tale based on a Raymond Carver short story. A group of men go on a fishing trip, find the body of a murdered woman in the river then go right on fishing. This same story was used by the late Robert Altman in his film 'Short Cuts', but for this movie Ray Lawrence has shifted the setting to Australia, where issues of race are added to the mix. But mostly this is a movie about personal pain and past traumas.

The Film: Zodiac

Directed by David Fincher - he of 'Se7en' and 'Fight Club' fame - 'Zodiac' stars Robert Downey Jr and Jake Gyllenhaal. It tells the true story of Paul Avery (Downey Jr) and Robert Graysmith (Gyllenhaal), a journalist and a cartoonist with the San Francisco Chronicle who became obsessed with finding the true identity of a serial killer who terrorised California for many years. Zodiac - as the killer named himself - took great pleasure in teasing the police and the press about what he had done and what he would do next. It's a true story and it's based largely on Graysmith's own book, also called 'Zodiac'.

The Book: Remainder by Tom McCarthy

In Tom McCarthy's novel 'Remainder' a man receives a settlement of £8.5m after an accident - the deal being that that really is the end of it. Whatever happened to him - and he can't remember - is never to be spoken of again. But the man, who has no name, is curious. And as he re-imagines his earlier life things become increasingly violent. The book was first published in Paris two years ago - all 750 copies of it were distributed without any marketing or publicity - and has since become something of a cult. 'Remainder' is published by Alma books at £11.99.

The Exhibition: Hansel's House

'Hansel's House' is the title of a new exhibition at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery by the Cork-born artist Tom Climent. The show is made up of four paintings - influenced as Climent acknowledges by the interiors painted by Dutch artists like Vermeer. But there are many differences, not least the obvious fact that Climent's pictures are big. 'Hansel's House' is at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery until 9 June.

The Performance: Perry Blake

Perry Blake is an Irish singer and songwriter perhaps better known in France than he is at home. He has just released his sixth album, 'Canyon Songs', and he's here with us tonight, accompanied by Mark Murphy on piano and Glen Garrett on guitar, to perform 'The Ballad of Billy Bob'.
