The Film: The Good German

Directed by Steven Soderbergh and based on the novel by Joseph Kanon, 'The Good German' stars George Clooney as Captain Jake Geismer, an American military journalist who arrives in Berlin to report on the Potsdam Conference. Post war Berlin is an utter mess, with the victors taking what they can, especially rocket scientists who, despite their Nazi credentials, will prove useful for the next war - already in the air between East and West. Geismer, who has his own Berlin history, soon discovers that corruption is rife and that a murder investigation involving his former mistress, played by Cate Blanchett, hides darker secrets yet.

The Film: Catch A Fire

Directed by Phillip Noyce, 'Catch A Fire' stars Tim Robbins and Derek Luke in an apartheid-era thriller set in South Africa. Written by Shawn Slovo, daughter of the famous activist Joe Slovo, it's the real-life story of how an ordinary man turns extraordinary, when his family gets assaulted by the system. Patrick Chamusso worked at a refinery and coached soccer in his spare time. But, after he and his wife were tortured, he became an active member of the ANC - and bombed the very refinery where he once worked.

The Book: The Pesthouse

'The Pesthouse' is the latest novel from English author Jim Crace. Set in the United States at an unspecified time in the future, the country is a wasteland, with its people migrating East in search of ships and rumours of escape to a promised land. On this American journey in reverse Franklin meets Margaret, an abandoned woman in the early stages of plague and together they take to the road. So it's a love story and a road trip - but not as we know it.

The Exhibition: Ceremony

'Ceremony' is the title of a new exhibition from Mick O'Dea at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery in Dublin. Here we see some of the work he made while in Paris at the Centre Culturel Irlandais. The work features portraits of friends and colleagues and also still-lives featuring the objects more usually seen as props in the portraits themselves.
