The Film: Becoming Jane
Directed by Julian Jarrold, 'Becoming Jane' is the story of Jane Austen before she became the original Queen of Chick Lit. It is the usual story of the period - cash strapped parents, rich benefactors, etiquette and snobbery - and in the middle of it all - a headstrong young girl of independent mind, writing novels on the side, and in love with an unsuitable Irishman called Tom Lefroy. Jane is played by Ann Hathaway and Lefroy by James McAvoy. 'Becoming Jane' opens on Friday.

The Play: Don Carlos at the Project

Directed by Lynne Parker, 'Don Carlos' at the Project in Dublin is Mike Poulton's version of Schiller's political thriller set in 16th-century Spain. The play has never been done in its entirety and for good reason - written in Germany in the 18th Century it lasts about seven hours. But this is where Mike Poulton comes in. His version is intelligible and short, clocking in at a mere three hours. The plot and the characters should be familiar to theatre goers - if not from seeing Verdi's opera version - then from the fact that it feels a bit like cut-and-paste Shakespeare. The crown prince in love with the queen (although in fairness she's not his mother) and the tyrannical king is at the heart of political and sexual intrigue. Something is rotten in the state of Spain. 'Don Carlos' is on at the Project Arts Centre until the end of the month.

The Exhibition: Michael Kane at the Rubicon Gallery

Now at the Rubicon Gallery, the Wicklow-born artist Michael Kane goes even further back for a tale of love and tragedy, finding inspirations for his drawings in the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. An added element to the show are the small bronze sculptures - a relatively new departure for Kane. Michael Kane's exhibition is at the Rubicon Gallery until 14 April.

The Book: There Are Little Kingdoms

Published by the Stinging Fly Press in Dublin, 'There Are Little Kingdoms' is a debut short story collection from Limerick-born Kevin Barry. There are thirteen stories in all, set in the towns and cities of contemporary Ireland. Here, Kevin Barry reads from 'See the Tree, How Big it's Grown'. 'There Are Little Kingdoms' is published by Stinging Fly Press at €12.
