The Film: Garden State
'Garden State' is the new movie written and directed by Zach Braff - he of cult TV show 'Scrubs'. It's the story of Andrew Largeman, a depressed actor who returns home to New Jersey - the Garden State - for the funeral of his mother. For many reasons it's not an easy homecoming - but this being a movie - Natalie Portman shows up and even the heavily medicated Andrew discovers that life mightn't be all that bad after all. 'Garden State' is in cinemas nationwide from Friday.

The Book: G.A.A.Y.
'G.A.A.Y.' is the new novel from Irish author Jarlath Gregory. Anto Broderick is young, Irish and gay and would dearly love to be a pop star of the Louis Walsh school. His father coaches the local G.A.A. but that's where Anto's sporting connections stop, that is, until he meets his sister's boyfriend. 'G.A.A.Y.' is published by Sitric Books and is available now for €12.99.

The Exhibition: Jack Donovan Retrospective
Jack Donovan - the artist - and former head of the Limerick School of Art and Design - celebrates his 70th birthday this year, and as part of the celebrations, Draoícht in Blanchardstown is hosting a retrospective of his work, dating from 1959 to 2004. The Jack Donovan exhibition is on at Draoícht until 21 May.

The Show: The Dream of a Summer Day
The Dream of a Summer Day is the latest production from the Storytellers Theatre Company. With live music and dance, we are introduced to the writer Lafcadio Hearn. From his early days in his native Greece, his childhood in Ireland, and his later years in America and Japan, The Dream of a Summer Day celebrates the writer's quite remarkable life. 'The Dream of a Summer Day' is in the Civic Theatre, Tallaght until Saturday, and then tours the country until 14 May.

The Performance: Philippe Cassard and The Parisii String Quartet
Tomorrow night, Philippe Cassard and The Parisii String Quartet are performing at The National Concert Hall in Dublin, as part of The Irish Times Celebrity Concert Series. Here, with the first movement of the Quintet in F Minor by Cesar Franck, are Philippe Cassard and The Parisii String Quartet.
