The Film: Kinsey
'Kinsey', the new movie from Bill Condon, stars Liam Neeson as Alfred Kinsey - the pioneering researcher who discovered what exactly Americans were doing in bed. His publications pretty much shook up America, which up until then didn't like to believe that ordinary people could do such extraordinary things - at least they were seen as extraordinary by a society that seemed to know very little about human sexuality. The movie also stars Laura Linney as Kinsey's wife Clara and Peter Sarsgaard and Chris O'Donnell as two of his hardworking researchers.

The Book: We Need to Talk About Kevin
In 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' by Lionel Shriver a successful career woman called Eva writes a series of letters to her estranged husband Franklin. The Kevin in question is their son - and he has just killed seven classmates, a cafeteria worker and a teacher. In her letters she tells the story of Kevin's upbringing and wonders what led him to such murderous acts. What Kevin has done challenges everything - even the one thing which we always assume to be unassailable: a mother's love for her son.

Picks of the Week
Every now and again we like to ask our reviewers to give us a steer on what's going on in the jungles of culture and give us a few of their own favourites - what's ringing their bells at the moment.

The current exhibition is a selection from items acquired during each year of the archive's existence - from cathedrals to airports to hotels - you can look and sometimes wonder just what were they thinking.
