This week's guest critic...

Tom McGurk is an award-winning journalist, current affairs broadcaster and the main anchor of RTÉ's rugby analysis, where he appears alongside his kitchen counterpart George Hook.

Tom is a keen cook and believes that "food is at the centre of everything.I suppose there's three elemental facts, there's birth, there's death and there's food and it is in the middle, and while we are alive and well we should enjoy it"

When Tom first took on The Restaurant challenge we were still wallowing in economic prosperity so he declared that he wanted to take on the "tyranny of the suburbanites" and went back to nature with his dishes. His unusual menu sparked much comment amongst our diners, they thought that his starter 'Spears and Tears' and main course 'Mount Leinster Brace' were obvious clues to indicate that a rugby player such as O'Driscoll was in the kitchen, but the name 'Spears and Tears' actually came from the asparagus spears in the starter, and Tom lives beside Mount Leinster in Carlow, hence the title of his main course.

Whilst the state of the country's finances may have altered greatly since Tom was last with us, his love of Irish produce remains, as does his penchant for quirky menu writing, case in point his "Meringues of Athenry" dessert. Despite such novelty names Tom is taking the menu very seriously and has every faith in winning tonight's cook-off with his culinary line-out.
