Neven Maguire, Guest Critic
Although still in his early thirties, chef Neven Maguire has been cooking in professional kitchens for more than eighteen years. He first started his apprenticeship when only 12 under the watchful eye of his mother, Vera, in the family business ‘MacNean House & Restaurant’ in Blacklion in Cavan.
Neven took over the restaurant in 2003 and is both Head Chef and Proprietor along with his wife Amelda. Neven has garnered many awards for the business including Georgina Campbell’s ‘Restaurant of the Year 2007’, ‘Jameson Chef of the Year 2004’, ‘Best Restaurant in Ulster, Food and Wine Magazine Awards 2003 and 2004’ and this year he won the top priize at the Food and Wine Annual Awards ‘Restaurant of the Year 2008’
Neven first came to national attention when he appeared on the RTE series ‘Open House’ in 1998, before the series ended in 2004 he had become the resident chef with a huge fanbase. Neven has also featured in his own series ‘Neven Cooks’ and in ‘Cooking with Love’ and ‘Ten of the Best’.
Neven has four best selling recipe books published to date. Including ‘Real Food for Families’ and his latest book ‘Food from the Sun’ is currently on sale and will be accompanied by a TV series in 2009.
