Programme 2: South Africa
Colin and Teresa Pielow, from Dublin moved to South Africa in October 2005 to run their own restaurant, Pielows Restaurant and set up a small vineyard. Having been on holidays in Tulbagh, just 1hr 20 mins north of Cape town they loved it so much they decided to move ther. They sold their restaurant in Cobh (Robin Hill), rented their cottage in Enniskerry and headed off with their two labrador dogs in tow.
They bought a traditional cape dutch style house with 1.5 hectares for ¤220k just down the street from the new restaurant, which is part of a well established guest house "De Oude Herberg" The plan being to cultivate the land as a vineyard. Dan & BecsColin and Teresa - both trained chefs - have owned and successfully run restaurants and a wine business in the past so they know their stuff. However South Africa is a totally new culture and theirs is a steep learning curve. With great passion and attention to detail we see them get to grips with the local culture, set up and manage the restaurant, cultivate the vineyard and ultimately produce their own wine.
