Michael Rooney & June McCormack
This husband and wife duo, also known as 'Draíocht', are veterans of the traditional Irish music scene and have substantial musical credentials. This young couple have already achieved great things individually, including major awards and two acclaimed recordings. The pair first met and performed together at a national Foróige celebration in UCD in 1990 as teenagers. They married in 2004 and have toured extensively as Draíocht, having performed throughout the States, Australia and New Zealand. They are in demand as performers and music tutors on both sides of the Atlantic.
The pair released their highly acclaimed CD, Land's End in 2006. A powerhouse recording, the CD documents the fiery musicianship Michael and June have honed in live concerts in the past decade, and includes several pieces written by Michael.
June, from Ballintogher, Co Sligo was recipient of the TG4 Young Traditional Musician of the Year Award in 1998 and last year published an Irish flute tutorial entitled 'Fliúit'.
Michael is widely regarded as one of the finest exponents of the Irish harp in traditional Irish music. Originally from Scotstown, Co. Monaghan, Michael has composed five major suites of music in the past decade, including an Aifreann na Gaeilge for the Sligo Choral Festival in 1999. In 2006 he published a book entitled 'Harp Tunes', which contains twenty-three of his own compositions. Michael is in much demand as an arranger, musician and accompanist in traditional musical circles.
