Episode 9

Patrick is baffled when a 17-year-old boy claiming to be his son is admitted to St. Matthew's after a mugging. When the boy, Fergus, produces a birth certificate bearing Patrick's name and that of his mother - Patrick's former girlfriend "Gillian Grey" the evidence is overwhelming. Patrick agrees to let Fergus stay for the night after he's discharged - much to Bernie's shock. Bernie urges Patrick to be cautious but his paternal instincts soon kick in.

Bernie sees a darker side to Fergus and later discovers that he wasn't mugged at all. She tells Patrick of her reservations about the boy. Patrick's decision to forego Bernie's best friend's wedding in Rome in order to spend more time with Fergus leads to the couple splitting up.

Julia is urged to run for the job of Hospital Director by Michael, when it's revealed that Gareth Doyle is running unopposed. Gareth's plans to end ante-natal screening in St. Matthew's set alarm bells ringing but Julia is initially reluctant to take the role. Realising that the services Gareth plans to dispense with, probably saved Fiona's baby's life, Julia decides to take Michael up on his offer. St. Matthew's is where she feels she can do the most good.

When a patient of Dan's has an adverse reaction to a cosmetic procedure, the tensions within the rival factions of the Clinic escalate. While Julia and Lorcan urge Dan to be sympathetic, Dan points out that as the woman signed a consent form, she has no legal recourse. Dan's cold, unfeeling attitude disappoints his ally Daisy who begins to waiver in her support for him. Daisy confronts Dan, warning him that they need to find a balance between profit and patient care.

Things just keep on getting better for Lorcan as Clodagh breaks up with Robert, realising that Lorcan is the only man she wants. Lorcan feels the same about Clodagh. They kiss and then spend the night together.

Cara becomes Fiona's unlikely birthing partner when she discovers that Fiona has no-one to be at the hospital with her. Baby Julian is safely delivered by Julia and a friendship between Fiona and Cara is born.
