Second Learner - Hanna Gillespie
This week we started an exciting new project to help you get ready for the summer. It's called "The Big Swim". We have chosen two or our viewers along with one of our contributors (Louise Lennox) and with the help of former Olympic Swimmers and qualified swimming instructors we are going to help them achieve their goal of learning how to swim.
Today we meet our Second learner Hanna Gillespie and her mentor to find out how she has been getting on with achieving her goal of being able to swim. Hanna took her first plunge with her Olympic Mentor Chantal Gibney and her swimming coach Pamela Cribbin on the 8th of April. Hanna was not well for a bit so she has only had 3 full lessons to date.
Hanna Gillespie from Kildare has always wanted to swim but could never quite get the hang of it. She is retired and would love to be able to swim when she goes on holidays.
Chantal Gibney is a former Irish Olympian in swimming (Sydney 2000) where she competed when she was 19 years old in 4 events; 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m freestyle. Chantal began swimming when she was 6 years old and has held numerous Irish records since then. Chantal swam with Trojan Swimming Club based out of Dublin until she was 19 years old, when she then travelled to Tampa, Florida to train full time for one year with the goal of qualifying for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. In Tampa, Chantal trained under current Swim Ireland National Performance Director Peter Banks, at the Blue Wave Swim Team.
Chantal is mentoring Hanna along with her swimming coach Pamela Cribbin.
Hanna is learning to swim at Clane Health & Leisure Club, Dublin Road, Clane, Co. Kildare
