Katriona's 5 top picks for this month!

1. Picture Book

Milo Armadillo by Jan Fearnley

ISBN: 9781406325553
Walker Books, £5.99, 5th April

1. Picture Book:

This is a really sweet picture book about a little girl who wants a fluffy pink bunny teddy bear. What she gets is a fluffy pink armadillo teddy instead. Milo armadillo would do anything to make the little girl happy so tries to change himself into a bunny.

At last he's going off to get teddy surgery (!) so he can at last be a bunny. It is only then that the little girl realises how much she loves him. This is really quite cute and has all sorts of messages about friendship for young children. The illustrations reminded me a little of Lauren Child's work.

2. Early Readers:

Alfie Green and the Chocolate Cosmos - Joe O'Brien

We love the Alfie Green series. It's by Joe O'Brien, an Irish author. When he's not writing kids books he's a gardener. Alfie Green is a little boy who has a gift for talking to plants and animals.

You can see from the map at the back of the book that he lives on Budsville Avenue but the magical kingdom of Arcania is right behind his house. The latest book is Alfie Green and the Chocolate Cosmos which is perfect for all the kids who might be breaking Lent this Sunday.

Alfie discovered the annual Chocolate Fair in his village is cancelled so he takes an adventure along with his friends Vinny the fork, Paddy the Spade, Jimmy the Clippers and Mick the Hoe to the Chocolate Cosmos to go and get some chocolate seeds to save the day.

Destiny, on the other hand, is an only child living on a rundown estate with a sickly but devoted mum who constantly tells her that she's really the daughter of a famous former rock star...When the two girls meet in unlikely circumstances, they are surprised to find in each other something they've been missing all their lives...

4. Ten years+

Skulduggery Pleasant: Dark Days by Derek Landy

Derek Landy is from Dublin, he made a horror movie once with Samantha Mumba. He got the idea for his Skulduggery Pleasant books while working on his parent's vegetable farm. The books are brilliant, they're about an undead skeleton detective called Skulduggery Pleasant. He's always cracking jokes and Landy attributes his own talent for dialogue to his stammer.

His sidekick is called Stephanie, she's from Haggard a seaside town in Ireland. Landy always releases his books in Ireland 2 weeks before they arrive in the UK so we've had the new book Dark Days for the last 2 weeks but the UK are only getting it now. He got a million and a half advance for his first book, at the time Cecelia Ahern held the record for the biggest advance.

Warner Brothers hold the movie rights and we think there might be a movie next year. This is book 4 in the series, the 5th will be out in September and there will be 9 books in total. In this book Skulduggery is lost in the Faceless Ones' portal and Stephanie has to find his head to save him, there's a big revenge plot.

5. Teen

The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary E. Pearson

ISBN: 9781406323016
Walker Books, £5.99, 5th April
Teen

Jenna Fox doesn't know who she is. She has just awoken from a year long coma after a car accident. A family that she doesn't know takes her home. As her memories resurface she starts asking questions her parents don't want to answer.

This is thriller/ sci-fi. It's set in the near future and questions how far science should influence medicine from a moral standpoint. I quite like the idea of a psychological thriller for teens and if it reads as well as it sounds it'll be a strong contender.
