Martin Moran - Master of Wine

Easter Wines:-

Name: Tesco Finest Fleurie
Vintage: 2008
Country & Region: Beaujolais, Burgundy, France.
Grape Variety: Gamay

Tasting Note: Bursting with juicy raspberry and cherry fruit, low tannin and a crisp fresh finish.

Food Match: Single village or 'cru' Beaujolais such as Fleurie or Brouilly are a classic French match for spring lamb as the fresh acidity in the wine cuts the fattiness of lamb. It's also one of the few reds that works well with meaty fish like salmon.

Other Facts: The winemaking technique used to make Fleuries and other Beaujolais wines minimizes the tannins. Tannins in red wine, like stewed tea, can cause a drying sensation on gums. The result is that it's almost like a very dark rosé rather than a red, so it can be served lightly chilled in warm weather.

Price: €8.99.
Buy It: Tesco Stores

Name: Dulong Reserve Médoc
Vintage: 2007
Country & Region: Médoc, Bordeaux, France
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot
Tasting Note: Blackcurrant is the key aroma but there's a slight spicy or savoury note that critics describe as pencil shavings. There's some tannin but this softens after the wine has been exposed to air either by sitting in the glass or by decanting.

Food Match: Roast lamb but also roast beef and hard cheese.

Other Facts: Bordeaux reds or clarets as they are known are a popular match with lamb. The Cabernet Sauvignon grape tends to produce wines with a lot of tannin. Exposing the wine to air makes them softer. We did this with this wine by tipping it into a clean jug and then back into the bottle, 15 minutes before serving. It's a myth that just pulling the cork lets the wine 'breathe' as the liquid's surface area is just too small.

Price: €7.49, reduced from €9.71 until 13/4/10
Buy It: Dunnes

Name: Chat-en-Oeuf Rouge
Vintage: 2007
Country & Region: Cotes de Ventoux, Rhone, France
Grape Varieties: Grenache and Syrah
Tasting Note: Rich, juicy berry fruit and soft tannins with a touch of spice.

Food Match: Lamb, but also a wide variety of red meat dishes such as stews, pies and burgers.

Other Facts: The name is a pun on the famous and very expensive red wine Chateauneuf-du-pape and translates as 'cat on egg', hence the drawing on the label. A percentage of the sale price of each bottle goes to the RSPCA.

Price: €8
Buy It: Superquinn

Name: Tesco Finest Botrytis Semillon 375ml.
Vintage: 2005
Country & Region: Griffith, NSW, South Eastern Australia.
Grape Varieties: Semillon

Tasting Note: Intense dried apricot and honey with maybe pineapple too on the nose and palate. It's nectar like sweet but has a crisp citrus tang on the finish that stops it becoming cloying.
Food Match: It would work well with chocolate cake such as black forest gateau but also with fruit tarts or blue cheese.

Other Facts: The term 'botrytis' in the name refers to a kind of so-called noble rot or fungus known as botrytis cinerea. It puncture's the grape's skin and then warm autumn days dehydrate the berries creating raisins on the vine and then, when crushed, the resulting juice has an extremely high sugar content, more in fact than the yeasts can ferment. Made for Tesco by Casella, who also make yellow tail. This style of wine is best known in Sauternes in Bordeaux where rot affected Semillon and Sauvignon are used to make the famous sweet wine.

Price: €8.05 per ½ bottle.
