Herbs to Help You Sleep with Jan DeVries

Monday, 29 March 2010

Jan De Vries, Naturopath

What happens when we don't get enough sleep?

When we don't get enough sleep the body gets fatigued. One becomes very tired and possibly one will start to lack in concentration.

How do you know if you are not getting enough sleep?

You will know when you are not getting enough sleep, when you start to become very tired, irritable, and will lack concentration. Also the lymphatic system will probably get "clogged up" as the lymph glands only work whilst you are sleeping. This is the reason why many M.E. patients have problems, with for instance, falling over, falling asleep, and too tired to do anything.

Is there anything we should do before going to bed?

A good walk "around the block" is good, and perhaps drinking herbal teas. It is also good to be relaxed before going to bed.

What herbs are good if you find it difficult to sleep?

Herbs such as:

Dormeasan - Take 30 drops before you go to bed

Night Essence - This works on the emotional body, so its good if you wake up in the middle of the night, or if you're lying awake with your mind racing.

Passiflora - This is good for sleep problems with anxiety. It can work well as a mix with Night Essence

Is there anything to take that will help us be refreshed when we wake up in the morning?

To be refreshed in the morning, it is most important to have at least 7 - 8 hours of quality sleep, which will give you that wonderful feeling when you wake up that you are ready for the day ahead. You will feel refreshed - that is when the lymphatic system has had a "cleaning". If the lymphatic system doesn't work very well, then pockets of waste material, land in the lymph glands and will infect ones blood, and that is the reason why sleep is so important.

Can you mention why each works and when/how to take them?

I will mention all the products that can be used and how each one works. I will also advise some dietary management, for instance not having cheese and biscuits before going to bed.

Is there any excersize you can do before bedtime or relaxation technique that you can use to help you drift off?

The exercises that can be done before going to sleep is the Hara Breathing Exercise, and the fantastic old Indian method "Arti Arti", and these should help to give one a really good sleep, and one will feel refreshed and happy the next morning.

For Snoring:- Take Marum Verum.
