- Calls to Childline increase by 25% last year
Children in despair made a staggering 800,000 calls to the ISPCC's Childline last year, almost 25% from the previous year.
The organisation says that more than one in three of the calls, which equates to about 300,000, went unanswered in 2009. Child protection workers are blaming the economic crisis for much of the increase, pointing out that children are being hit hard by the financial hardships and increasing debts that the economy is inflicting on families.
Issues like loneliness, anxiety, abuse, violence and neglect are still the main reasons why children called. We speak to CEO of the ISPCC, Ashley Balbirine. We also talk to Gabrielle Gerraghty, who is a Childline telephone volunteer.
