Conor Pope - Money Man - Vouchers and Coupons - Putting money back in your pocket!

Wednesday, 10 February 2010

Consumer Expert Conor Pope brings us instant ways to make your money go further - plenty of vouchers/coupons/deals. So it's not financial planning, and it's not consumer rights - its practical deals and bargains around Ireland right now that we all can avail of.

When money is tight as it is for most people right now, Conor will show us where to get some free money!

Conor Pope

Conor Pope is a consumer journalist and broadcaster. He writes the Pricewatch page in The Irish Times (and has a weekly consumer slot on the Ray Darcy Show on Today FM). He was the co-presenter of the consumer lifestyle programme, Living Lightly on RTE last autumn and is the author of the best selling book Stop Wasting Your Money. http://www.irishtimes.com/blogs/pricewatch/

A third more consumers than previously are collecting and using coupons according to figures from the National Consumer Agency. But another third of Irish shoppers never use coupons.

Irish Independent Directory

Has hundreds of euros worth of vouchers for people living in the Dublin area but similar directories exist for towns and cities all over the country. The vast majority of people who get these books never bother to look at them.

You'll also find coupons on the back of receipts from some supermarkets. They have A-Z classified sections, money saving coupons, maps, timetables, sports guides and much, much more.

Delivered to over 1.3 million homes and businesses throughout Ireland, your local Irish Independent Directory is the ultimate advertising medium if you're looking to promote products and services within your own locality.

You'll find a local Irish Independent Directory in Dublin, Cork, Kildare / Wicklow, Louth / Meath, Limerick / Clare / Tipperary, Carlow / Kilkenny and Galway/Mayo. Discounts off dry-cleaning, taxis, pizzas etc.

Coupons can save you money - but don't buy products you don't need just because you have a coupon. Think about how you will use your vouchers, use €2.50 and you get €10 elsewhere.

Tesco

. A €2.50 Tesco clubcard voucher will buy you a ten euro token from Milano's or Apache Pizza
. A €4 Tesco clubcard voucher gets one adult into the zoo.
. A €10 Tesco clubcard gets you a €40 voucher from Siblu - who are the camping specialists in France - I have been on their sites and they're excellent. Camping is a very cheap holiday.
. Tesco dropped their coupons on the back of receipts two years ago.
. You can also use the vouchers to get substantial discounts off jewellery, days out across the country, holidays and entry into a lot of kids indoor playgrounds around the country.

. Trick is to maximise the number of points you accrue by keeping an eye of double point days and products which may attract extra points
. If you sign up to a Tesco credit card, you can get money back on your groceries, hotel stays and restaurants. Working in tandem with Tesco's Clubcard, the credit card can be used in any location which accepts Visa.
. For example, for every €2 you spend in Tesco you will earn three clubcard points, double the points compared to cash, cheques or Laser. When you use the card in other locations, you will earn 1 point for every €2 spent.
. The vouchers you earn can be used against purchases in any Tesco store, so you can get money off your weekly shop, or you can use them on clubcard deals, where you'll get four times their value in deals tokens.
. So, for example, if you spend €120 on your weekly shop and use a Tesco credit card to pay, you will earn 180 points. Similarly, if you pay for €350 in purchases outside of the supermarket with your card over the course of a month, you will earn an additional 175 points. In one month then, you would have earned 895 points which would entitle you to a subscription to House & Home for example, or entry for two children to Dublin Zoo.

. Pros: Groceries are an essential purchase, so why not earn as you spend?
. Cons: Because of the points on offer if you use your credit card, you may be disinclined to shop elsewhere, even if it is more convenient or cheaper.

Superquinn:

There is a Reward Card scheme at Superquinn, we don't have any current voucher offers. Their next mailing goes out to Reward Card customers in late March with the next batch of offers/vouchers and coupons. This card gives customers 1 reward point for every €1 they spend. That converts into one point per cent. The points stay on the reward card. They can redeem the points they build up off their shopping or trade them in for One4All vouchers (general vouchers to be bought in Post Office as presents). Nothing on the receipts.

Companies are desperate for our business. Sign up for all loyalty cards for every shop and get money back. If we use our coupons companies will provide more of them. Not all supermarkets won't accept Pigsback vouchers, dunes Tesco and Supevalu accept them, but Centra and Spar don't accept them. Have to tell the restaurant or taxi co. or the store that you're using a Pigsback voucher.

Growth in online coupon sites

1. Pigsback.com

. Hundreds of vouchers which you can print off over and over again.
. Pigsback.com, an online club of consumers and brands,
. Buy one get one Free in the Gourmet Burger in Dublin
. Range of grocery coupons - only accepted in Dunnes, Superquinn, Tesco and Supervalu
. €1 off any product in the Persil range
. 60c off Brennan's Natural Recipe Wholewheat
. €1.50 off Sun All in One Dishwasher tablets
. The list goes on - changes frequently but if you were to buy all of the 20 items on the list this week it will automatically knock €20 of your grocery bill.
. The website also has a credit card, which enables users to earn extra "PiggyPoints". For example, you will earn one PiggyPoint for every €2 spent on the card, while you will receive 2,000 PiggyPoints when your account is opened and you make your first card purchases.
. PiggyPoints can be used to claim a variety of rewards. For example, to get a €10 voucher for restaurant TGI Friday's, you will need to collect 900 points, while 4,500 points will get you a €50 Essensuals hair voucher, and 400 points will give an adult free entry to Duffy's Circus.

It can take a long time to accrue points by buying online for the discounts so beware of that.
