"Cold Thursday evening, with some frost and fog, but wet and windy weather will sweep in off the Atlantic overnight, and temperatures will rise. Friday will be windy and mostly cloudy with further rain at times, but there will be some dry spells also. Winds strong and gusty southerly. Mild, despite the rain and wind, with top temperatures 5 to 10 C., - highest over Munster. So a fairly significant thaw on Friday. Windy Friday evening and for much of Friday night, with a spell of heavy rain for a time.
This should bring a further thaw, and much of the snow, even on higher ground, should have largely cleared by morning. But some standing water or local spot flooding is possible on the roads for a time. Mild with no frost. The rain will tend to clear towards morning ,and winds should ease a little. Saturday and Sunday will be bright, mostly dry days with sunny spells, and just well scattered rain or hail showers. Fresh southwest winds on Saturday will fall light for Sunday. Top temperatures in the range 5 to 9 C., over the weekend, but the nights will be cold with some frost and patches of fog"

Paul Cunningham's now infamous winter hat!
One of the highlights of the "Big Freeze" was Paul Cunningham's appearance on the Nine o'clock news last Wednesday, January 7th. Sporting a fine winter hat, Paul gave us all a little giggle, even newsreader Anne Doyle found it hard to maintain a composed expression when they returned to studio after Mr Cunningham's report.
