Random Acts of Kindness - Mary Magan
Wednesday, 23 December 2009
It is Christmas week; it is our third of our 3 nominees/winners.
Today we have Mary Magan who was surprised at specially organised school assembly in St' Paul's National School, Dooradoyle, Co. Limerick and the VT interviews of her family and friends talking about how wonderful Mary is as a person. On the show today we will be meeting Mary, her husband Brendan, nominator Leila Fitzgerald, family and school children who have come to support Mary on. Later we will be given her prize.
Mary Magan has been a lollipop lady for the past 33 years in rain, hail or snow on the very busy Cork/Limerick road, she knows all 600 children by name and is now on her second generation of children. For the past 11 years, every Saturday she has been looking after Louis an 11 year old with down-syndrome, to give his Mum a break.
Together Mary and husband Brendan have fostered 6 children long-term from as young as 3 up till 12 or 13 years old. One even stayed with them when he went to college.
Mary also collects prizes for Bingo for the old people, and helps organise the shoe box collections every year and is involved with the trucks transporting the boxes. She has helped immigrants in the community gets jobs and helped them furnish their houses.
When her neighbours are sick she gets their shopping and helps out with child-minding for single parents returning to college or work. In St Paul's Church she does a reading every month, and is a Minister of the Eucharist giving Holy Communion weekly.
