Consumer Price Watch - Christmas Gifts

Tuesday, 27 October 2009

Today is the fourth and last day of Price Watch, a price comparison study of various products in the large stores around the country. Each week we will choose a category and this week we are looking at gifts you may be thinking of buying for someone for Christmas. We will get the price of the same three Christmas gifts in four of the main retailers in the Republic and two retailers in Northern Ireland.

NB We want to make sure not to be sending people up north to do their shopping but what we can say is that if something is cheaper up north than with our pockets being less full than they were a few years ago we have to buy where we get the best price.

According to a study commissioned by the NCA:

3 in every 4 people now shop around

Tina Leonard, Consumer Expert

We are carrying on from our very popular Trolley Watch item and keeping price comparison as the continuing theme. Today with a nod to the very organised people already starting their Christmas shopping, we are looking at three products which may be high up on everybody's Santa list.

What are we hoping to find from this survey?
Where you will get the best price for each product among various retailers in the Republic and Northern Ireland.

What are we looking at this week?
This week we are looking at an IPod, a digital camera and a Nintendo DS Lite.

Argos NI £135 / €149

DID Electrical €169.95
Smyths €168.99
Argos €189

The cheapest store in the Republic is Power City at €168.95. The cheapest store overall is Smyths and Argos in NI at €149. That is a difference of €19.95 between the dearest and cheapest.

The cheapest store in the Republic is Harvey Norman at €159 and they are also the cheapest store overall. There is a difference of €10.99 between the dearest and cheapest.

In total that is a saving of €76.54 if you just shop around and make sure to get the best price for every product you buy.

We have the equivalent of the saving in cash.

When you're buying up north are our rights the same?
Your rights are still the same re repairs, returns etc. i.e. if the product is faulty or not as described, the shop is obliged to repair, replace or refund. Also check that manufacturer's warranties/guarantees also cover RoI.

What will we be checking the prices of next week?
Unfortunately this is our last week of Price Watch but Trolley Watch will be back in December in time for the Christmas Big Shop.
