Consumer - Price Watch: Three baby products & Gas Alert

Tuesday, 13 October 2009

We will get the price of the same three baby products in four of the main baby retailers in the Republic and two baby retailers in Northern Ireland.

NB We want to make sure not to be sending people up north to do their shopping but what we can say is that if something is cheaper up north than with our pockets being less full than they were a few years ago we have to buy where we get the best price.

Tina will be highlighting the recall on a number of models of gas cookers and giving people the advice needed if they have one of these gas cookers and the helpline numbers they need to call if they have one of them.

According to a study commissioned by the NCA: 3 in every 4 people now shop around

Tina Leonard, Consumer Expert
We are carrying on from our very popular Trolley Watch item and keeping price comparison as the continuing theme. However this time we are going to look at various goods around your house that you will probably want to replace if broken or old. Today we are concentrating on what new mums and dads will be buying when they have a new arrival.

This week we are talking about baby products and we are looking at a buggy, a car seat and a baby rocker.

So where did you go to this week?
We went to Mothercare, Argos, Smyths and various other retailers.

So what price comparison did you find in the stores?
Tina reveals the prices of the four stores, dearest to cheapest.

Quinny Buzz 3(Buggy)
Dearest to cheapest:
Mothercare €455
Tony Kealys €455
Murphy's Nursery Store €450
Mothercare £385 / €412
Little Angels €399.99
Toys R Us £299.99 / €321

The cheapest is Toys R Us in Northern Ireland at €321. There is a difference of €134 between the dearest and cheapest.

Maxi Cosi Cabriofix (Car Seat)
Dearest to cheapest:
Mothercare €139
Tony Kealys €139
Babybizz €135
Little Angels €134.99
Halfords €124.99
Mothercare £115 / €123
Toys R Us £99.99 / €107

The cheapest is Toys R Us at €107. There is a difference of €32 between the dearest and cheapest.

Fisher Price Newborn to Baby Rocker (Baby Rocker)
Dearest to cheapest:
Mothercare €75
Littlewoods.ie €74
Argos €69.99
Smyths €69.99
Argos £59.99 / €64
Smyths £54.99 / €59

The cheapest is Smyths in Northern Ireland at €59 and the difference between the dearest and cheapest is €16.

In total that is a saving of €182 if you just shop around and make sure to get the best price for every product you buy.

We have the equivalent of the saving in nappies so we can pile them up and show how many nappies you can buy if you save €182

When you're buying up north are our rights the same?

Your rights are still the same re repairs, returns etc. i.e. if the product is faulty or not as described, the shop is obliged to repair, replace or refund. Also check that manufacturer's warranties/guarantees also cover ROI.

What will we be checking the prices of next week?
We will be checking the price of a television, a DVD player and a stereo system.
