Consumer Price Watch: Three White Goods

Tuesday, 6 October 2009

Today is the first day of Price Watch, a price comparison study of various products in the large stores around the country. Each week we will choose a category and this week we are looking at white goods. We will get the price of the same three white goods in four of the main electrical stores in the Republic and two electrical stores in Northern Ireland.

According to a study commissioned by the NCA:

3 in every 4 people now shop around

What is it all about?
We are carrying on from our very popular Trolley Watch item and keeping price comparison as the continuing theme. However this time we are going to look at various goods around your house that you will probably want to replace if broken or old.

What are we hoping to find from this survey?
Where you will get the best price for each product among various stores in the Republic and Northern Ireland.

What are we looking at this week?
This week we are talking about white goods and we are looking at a dishwasher, a washing machine and a Fridge/Freezer.

So where did you go to this week?
We went to Curry's, Harvey Norman, Power City and DID Electrical in the Republic and Currys, Laser Electronics and Dalzells of Markethill.

Price Comparisons:-

Bosch WAE24164GB (Washing Machine)
Dearest to cheapest:
DID €379.95
Laser Electronics £349 / €383
Power City €389.95
Harvey Norman €399
Currys NI £379.99 / €417
Currys €479
Which is cheapest and if there is much of a difference?

Dalzells of Markethill £339 / €372
Harvey Norman €399
Power City €399
DID €399.95
Currys €400
Currys NI £399.99 / €439

Which is cheapest and if there is much of a difference?
Dalzells of Markethill are the cheapest. There is a difference of €28 between the dearest and cheapest. It was difficult to find the same products stocked in six stores but we found this model of Fridge/Freezer in Dalzells of Markethill which is an electrical store in Armagh. It's worth really shopping around when you are spending a lot of money.

Zanussi ZDF511 (Dishwasher)
Dearest to cheapest:
DID €244.95
Power City €299
Dalzells of Markethill £279 / €306
Currys NI £279.99 / €307
Harvey Norman €329
Currys €349

Which is cheapest and if there is much of a difference?
D.I.D Electrical are the cheapest. The difference between the dearest and cheapest is €104.05.

In total that is a saving of €231.10 if you just shop around and make sure to get the best price for every product you buy.

When you're buying up north are our rights the same?
Your rights are still the same re repairs, returns etc. i.e. if the product is faulty or not as described, the shop is obliged to repair, replace or refund. Also check that manufacturer's warranties/guarantees also cover RoI.

What about recycling your old product? Would you have to return it to the store up North if you bought it there?
The WEEE Directive is the same accross all member states. But it doesn't matter where you buy the item. For example, if you bought a washing machine in Newry, the next time you buy one you can still give it to Power City down the road if you are buying the new washing machine there.

What will we be checking the prices of next week?
We will be helping out all the mums and dads to be next week by looking at three main baby products - a buggy, a car seat and a high chair and seeing where you can get the best prices for each.
