According to Westend Dental practice in Galway:-
"The basic factor which changes tooth colour is accumulated fur which absorbs dyes in itself. Many foodstuffs such as tea, coffee, chocolate, red wine, soy sauce, berries, dark fruits and fruit sauces, tomatoes and tomato sauces/juices, dark veg and citrus plants/juices, coca cola etc all posses dyeing properties. They are able to paint teeth in colours from hazel to practically black. Some medicines, smoking, genetic diseases can also serve as the reason of teeth discolouration.
The colour of teeth changes with age inevitably, because the enamel of teeth is thinned with time and the dyeing effect of food and drink stuffs increases."
Home remedies for Teeth whitening are very effective however not suitable everyone. The best candidates for whitening are those with stains caused by coffee, tobacco or ageing.
Avoid using the home remedies if any of the following relate to you:-
. Sensitive teeth or gums
. Bleeding gums
. Smokers should avoid trying out hydrogen peroxide as the mixture of smoking and hydrogen peroxide could have an adverse effect on tissue damage already known to be caused by smoking. Instead use the strawberry method.
If in doubt consult your dentist or dental hygienist.
How to provide Optimum care for your teeth and gums.
Brush your teeth twice a day. Once in the morning after breakfast and before you go to bed.
US based website "yourpearlywhiteteeth" recommends:
"If you eat an acid fruit such as strawberry or any other healthy but acidic food such as yogurt, I would advise that you wait at least 20 min to brush your teeth since the acid softens the enamel and you would be brushing some enamel away if you brush immediately. After 20 min the saliva would have 'buffered' the acid on the teeth and would be o.k. to brush and floss."
Flossing daily is essential to prevent gum disease and bad breath. Flossing gets rid of food. Food feeds bacteria. Bacteria destroy your gums, bones, and teeth. Brushing will help, rinsing will help, but diligent flossing on a daily basis is essential, and the sooner you start doing this, the sooner it will become habitual and the sooner you can stop complaining about it. You probably brush your teeth without thinking about it. Why? Because you have been doing it since you were a child. If you have children, do them a favour and teach them to floss at the same time you teach them to brush. It's like seatbelts and bicycle helmets.
Make sure you are using the right toothbrush for your teeth and gums, soft, medium or hard. Change your toothbrush regularly i.e. before the bristle become worn down or ragged.
An interesting Fact from www.reference.com:
William Addis of England is credited with creating the first mass-produced toothbrush in 1780.In 1770 he had been placed in jail for causing a riot. While in prison, he decided that the method for teeth brushing of the time - rubbing a rag on one's teeth with soot and salt - could be improved. So he took a small animal bone, drilled small holes in it, obtained some bristles from a guard, tied them in tufts, then passed the bristles through the holes on the bone and glued them. He soon became very wealthy. He died in the year 1808 and left the business to his eldest son, William II.
. Never share your toothbrush.
. Preferably use a toothpaste containing fluoride.
. Rinse your teeth and gums with a mouth wash twice daily.
. Visit your Dentist or Dental hygienist at least twice a year.
1. Whitening teeth with Strawberries
What?!: Brushing teeth using mashed strawberries.
Method:- Crush strawberries to create a paste, use a regular toothbrush to apply on teeth, leave on for 4-5 mins and rinse.
Note: The sugar acid in the strawberry will harm your teeth if you don't brush your teeth after. Leave 20 min between brushing teeth with strawberries and regular brushing, but do brush your teeth with regular paste to get rid of the unhealthy acids.
It is not recommended that you brush daily with strawberries, and you should be careful to remove all seeds with floss after you've used the paste.
Some say that mixing baking soda with the strawberry paste is even more effective.
2. Whitening with Charcoal
What?!:- Brushing teeth using activated charcoal
Method:- Charcoal can be purchased in any health food store and often comes in capsule form. Capsules can be broken open and contents poured into a saucer/eggcup.
Dampen your toothbrush and then rub in charcoal until toothbrush is completely black. You can then use either organic toothpaste or baking soda to mix with the charcoal. For today's show, we'll use organic toothpaste.
Brush as normal and rinse.
Note:-Reportedly used by people in Africa. Crushed, activated charcoal can be used as a cleaning and whitening agent. It's best to use organic/natural toothpaste and rinse well after this treatment.
Others suggest that you first place charcoal on your brush, making black and then dip the top of the brush in baking soda to maximize whitening effect.
It's always recommended to brush with regular toothpaste about ten minutes after the treatment to remove the foul taste from your mouth!
3. Granny's home whitening remedy
What?!: Old wives tale with age old tooth whitener baking soda. As you can imagine, this one doesn't taste too good!
Method:- mix on a small plate 1 tsp of baking soda, a dash of salt
Then add a few drops of white vinegar, which will make mixture foam.
Note: Remember to wash your teeth with fluoride toothpaste 20 min after using Granny's recipe!
If you are in a hurry sprinkle some table salt on top of your toothpaste for an instant sparkle!
4. Oral Salt Rinse:-
What?!: Nothing like the taste of the sea to clean out your mouth in the mornings!
Method:- Mix ¼ pint of water with 2 tbl spoons of salt. Rinse after brushing the teeth.
Note: This method is safe to use daily and is an excellent antiseptic! Don't use more than once daily however, as salt can be somewhat abrasive and will eventually wear the surface of the tooth down.
The best thing about this method of natural teeth whitening is that it's practically free!
4. Whitening with Hydrogen Peroxide
Procedure: This is the most controversial of all methods as there are pros & cons to using Hydrogen Peroxide on your teeth.
Method:- Equally dilute the Hydrogen Peroxide with water. Dip your toothbrush in the solution and brush. Do not to swallow the solution as it's bad for you, not to mention that it tastes really bad! After brushing with the H.P , brush with regular toothpaste so as to avoid tooth-decay. Repeat this method only once or twice weekly.
Another suggestions is to take one teaspoon of baking soda and some drops of hydrogen peroxide (no more than 3%). Mix these ingredients and form a paste. Brush your teeth with this paste.
A final one is to rinse your mouth with straight hydrogen peroxide before brushing. Swish a mouthful round in your mouth for roughly 60 seconds and SPIT OUT before brusing your teeth as normal. Do not swallow the solution.
Pregnant women and breastfeeding mums should not use this solution.
There is also a fear that smokers who use Hydrogen Peroxide to whiten their teeth can exacerbate the damage to teeth caused by the smoking and are advised not to use H.P as a method of whitening.
Note: It is of the upmost importance to follow the recommended instructions with Hydrogen Peroxide. Always ensure that you mix it equally with water before use.
