Gardening with Eugene Higgins - Boxes and Baskets

Thursday, 9 April 2009

Today we'll be showing you how, even if you haven't got a garden you can still have some great colour in the form of window boxes and hanging baskets.

Eugene Higgins, Budding Genius:

Pot for outside your door:
Pot, €39.95
Cytisus Racemosa ,€12.95

Tips for planting in pots
. Clean and wash out pots if using pots from last year
. Put old compost into the garden, use new compost
. Mix soil through the compost, binds the soil.
. Put some shale / pebbles on top to stop the water from evaporating

Basket 1, €9.95
Oregano, €3.95
Trailing Tomatoes, €1.95

Curley Basket, €24.99 Curley basket is available from
Basket Contains:
Dianthus Rosebud
Heathers Selection
Spring Torch - Foliage Variety
Erica Carnea Pink Spangles
Pink Cyclemen
Erica Darleyensis White Perfection

Tips for planting in baskets:
. Ensure you get a basket that holds water well
. Ensure you have great compost
. Make sure you don't overfill a smaller hanging basket, go for a bigger one instead as they can dry out very quickly
. For watering, you can place ice cubes into the basket. This will ensure that the basket is constantly kept moist.
. Beware of the wind, the wind can dry them out very quickly

Box 1, Terracotta trough, €9.95
Buxus, €2.25
Violas, €3.95

Box 2, Terracotta Trough, €9.95
Heather, €3.95
Campanula Catherina, €6.50

Tips for planting in boxes:
. Terracotta looks a lot better than plastic
. If you have plastic ones, ensure you have drainage holes drilled in them. Knock the drainage holes through properly as you may break the box
. All colours of nature mix, don't be afraid to be adventurous with colours
. Try and get a base / saucer to go under the trough as it will keep the moisture in.

It's important to feed all of the above regularly, as when you water them it can wash the goodness out of the plants.

Eugenes tips for the weekend;
. Tidy out you water feature, check the filters and pumps as they haven't been running through the winter and autumn so may be clogged up
. Plant mimulas, they do very well in shady areas.
. Make sure you trim back lavender as they may get too woody.

Plants supplied on the set come from Blackbanks Garden Centre, Raheny, Co Dublin 01 8327047.
