Monsters vs. Aliens
The Boat That Rocked
DVD of the Week - Twilight

Monsters vs. Aliens

Michael Doherty has some competition on his hands as we have the Ryan family reviewing Monsters Vs Aliens!

However Michael was busy this week catching up with Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland at the junket.

Director: Rob Letterman, Conrad Vernon
Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogan, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett.
Running Time: 94mins
Rating: ****
Classification: PG
Courtesy: Paramount Pictures

Michael's verdict: It's never easy to match up to Pixar in the animated stakes but Dreamworks' latest effort is a gem. Reese Witherspoon and Kiefer Sutherland provide the voices for this 3D adventure in which a rag-tag group of monsters (including an American girl who has grown to enormous height following a meteorite shower) battle some nasty aliens. The kids will love the thrills and spills while the adults will enjoy the references to all those 50s sci-fi classics.

The Boat That Rocked

Director: Richard Curtis
Starring: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Bill Nighy
Running Time: 120 mins
Rating: **
Classification: 15A
Courtesy: Universal Pictures

Michael's Verdict: He can be a cracking writer but there's a part of Richard Curtis that just seems inexorably drawn to schmaltz. While not as yucky as Love, Actually, this pirate radio tale does its best to yank out on the emotional heart-strings. What rescues it from the murky depths is the superb soundtrack and the infectious way in which a very strong cast - Nighy, Nick Frost, Rhys Ifans and our own Chris O'Dowd - celebrate the music
