Grow Your Own Veg and Mothers Day Gifts from the Garden

Thursday, 19 March 2009

Today we're back with Eugene and we'll be catching up with our family from Dublin who are growing their own vegetables out their back garden. Eugene will also be giving us some great ideas for mothers day gifts as well as tips for what everyone can do in their gardens this weekend.

It's time for a catch up with our grow your own veg family and it's mothers day this Sunday!

Eugene Higgins, Gifted Gardener

I was born into Horticulture in a plant nursery/garden centre in north Co Dublin started in 1940 by my grandfather, so my excuse is, "that its in my blood".

On leaving school I worked in various Dublin radio stations and spent my spare time working in the family run garden centre, this soon reversed after spending an intervening number of years in Australia.

Over the last 12 years I have been combining Horticulture and media work.besides working on the Afternoon Show since season 1 my media contributions have also included:

. BBC Room For Improvement (Season 1)
. FM 104 Claire McKeon Show
. Lite Fm Dublin Saturday magazine

In 1999 I returned to retailing opening Colour Green Garden Centre in Malahide Dublin, which won "Best Specialist Garden Centre 2002-Ireland".

In 2004 we subsequently moved the business to Tullamore, Co Offaly, where we have a lot more space around us and have concentrated on developing our Colour Green Landscaping Services. Our highlight to date was, being commissioned last year by the Afternoon Show to restore a nursing home's spectacular Japanese garden that had run into serious disrepair (Carrigoran Nursing Home, Co Clare).

It has been two months since we last caught up with the Keogh family from Dublin who under Eugene's guidance are growing their own vegetables. The last time we saw them things weren't looking too good due to cold weather, lets see how Eugene got on this time.

Eugenes tip for the weekend

Trim back your roses this weekend with a sharp secretaurs
. Look for green buds growing on your rose bush
. When you find them cut a quarter of an inch above the bud
. Cut them diagonally.
. A benefit of this is that pruning speeds up the growth of new shoots to replace weaker or older shoots.

"Next week we'll be looking at getting a lovely garden for very little price. So if you've taken some cuttings which have turned your garden into a spring time sensation we'd love to see your pictures, email them through to "
