. Righteous Kill
Michael Doherty, RTE Guide:
Director: Joe Avnet
Starring: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino
Running Time: 101m
Courtesy: Lions Gate Entertainment
Plot: Two veteran New York City detectives (De Niro and Pacino) work to identify the possible connection between a recent murder and a case they believe they solved years ago; is there a serial killer on the loose, and did they perhaps put the wrong person behind bars?
Director: David Mamet
Starring: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Emily Mortimer
Running Time: 99m
Courtesy: Sony Entertainment
Plot: Circumstances conspire to force a top martial arts instructor back into the cut-throat world of competition
Verdict: You know with David Mamet that you're going to enter a world of shadows and mirrors, where hard-boiled characters spout quotable dialogue and nothing is what it seems. At its best, this world can deliver such gems as Glengarry Glen Ross or House of Games. Unfortunately, Redbelt is not vintage Mamet. Sure there are twists and turns in this story of a martial arts instructor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) forced to question his principles, but the plot-twists are clunky instead of sharp and contrived instead of sharp. Perhaps a few more script polishes might have done the trick.
Director: Paul WS Anderson
Starring: Jason Statham, Joan Allen
Running Time: 105m
Plot: One would be nice
Verdict: Jason Statham. Fast Car. Testosterone. enough said!
Director: Ed Harris
Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Ed Harris, Jeremy Irons
Running Time: 114m
Courtesy: New Line Cinema
Plot: Two friends hired to police a small town that is suffering under the rule of a rancher find their job complicated by the arrival of a young widow.
