The Beauty Panel - Waterproof Mascara

Wednesday, 14 May 2008

We've given our luscious ladies four brands of waterproof mascara to put to the test over a couple of weeks. From seriously inexpensive to particularly pricey, we test out some of the biggest names on the market to see if they really do what they say on the tin!

Beauty Panellists

Sharon Brennan (39)

They live in Ratoath, Co. Meath.

Aida is a WeightWatchers instructor and likes to take care of herself. She "thinks every woman should and with inexpensive products it ain't hard to do".

Jeanna Gallagher (28)
I'm originally from a small town in Roscommon but I presently work in Dublin. I really enjoy reading and going to the cinema. I used to work in a bookshop and I can easily spend hours getting lost in one! I studied film for a few years in college and have been involved behind the camera too. My favourite films tend to be classics; anything from Alfred Hitchcock thrillers to Audrey Hepburn romances.
But of course - I like to get outside too! I really enjoy hiking, cycling and badminton. I love heading off for a day and just walking somewhere for hours. Badminton is a great way to meet new people and its really good exercise.

Panellist 1: Donna Lyons

Product:- Rimmel "100% Waterproof"
€7.25 for 8ml
Do you normally wear mascara? Yes but not waterproof

What products have you tried? I normally use Mac or Lancome, I love ones that give volume to lashes.

How did you find the look of the mascara? It was clumpy and made eyelashes go really stiff.

Was there any smell? Yes, but not too strong.

Did the mascara have the desired effect on lengthening lashes? Not really, I didn't think it was great in terms of lengthening.

Did you test the "Waterproof" side of this mascara? We went swimming at the weekend and it didn't run off. Little clumpy bits came off but it certainly didn't run down my face.

How difficult was the mascara to take off? It was horrible to take off. It wasn't difficult as I used eye-make up remover. Took lots of rubbing and it actually took my eyelashes off. It hurt a bit- I don't like touching my eyes.

Could you take it off with just soap and water? I tried taking it off in the shower but it didn't work, I had to use remover.

If not removed at night, would mascara last another day? You could but the clumps would be coming off.

Did you think the mascara was value for money? I suppose it is because it doesn't run but it doesn't do what mascara

Would you use it again? No

Were there any disadvantages to using this product? Just the clumpy bits and the fact it was so dry on my lashes

Did the product do what it said on the tin? Yes, it was 100% waterproof

Would you recommend this product to your friends? Yes, if they were looking for a waterproof mascara.

Rating out of 10: 8/10

Notes:-
I took a mark off for the clumps and a mark off for all the eyelashes I lost!

Panellist 2: Sharon Brennan

Product: Collection 2000 "Aquamax"
€4.70 for 8ml

Do you normally wear mascara? Sometimes; more often now than I used to.

What products have you tried? I usually wear Maybelline but have tried L'Oreal and Mac. Am wearing No.7 at the minute.

How did you find the look of the mascara? It was very light - I was using a few coats and it still didn't come up thick.- compared to one coat of others.

Was there any smell? No

Did the mascara have the desired effect on lengthening lashes? Slightly but there really wasn't much of a result. It felt like conditioner on lashes rather than actual mascara.

Did you test the "Waterproof" side of this mascara? Yes, I splashed my face and it didn't run. You definitely could splash about in the water or go out in the rain wearing it. It was waterproof.

How difficult was the mascara to take off? I just used cotton wool and water. No problem getting it off at all.

Could you take it off with just soap and water? Yes.

If not removed at night, would mascara last another day? No, you'd have to re-apply. It wouldn't last a day never mind two.

Did you think the mascara was value for money? No, because it wasn't effective. It definitely wasn't dramatic enough as mascaras go.

Would you use it again? No but I would buy it for my 13 year old.

Were there any disadvantages to using this product? Yes, it didn't work..

Did the product do what it said on the tin? It didn't give the black mascara look but it was waterproof.

Would you recommend this product to your friends? No.

Rating out of 10: 4/10

Notes:-
Perfect for a young girl starting to wear mascara. It's so light, or maybe if you don't like to look like you're wearing mascara..

Panellist 3:- Aida D'Arcy
Product: The Body Shop Waterproof Mascara- in Brown
€14.50 for 10ml

Do you normally wear mascara? Yes, everyday. I don't wear waterproof much- I would probably have some at home but don't even know its waterproof.

What products have you tried? I normally wear MAC 'plush lash' and I love Estée Lauder.

How did you find the look of the mascara? Not great, it just didn't have the desired effect. I don't think I would have bought it myself, I wouldn't buy make up normally from The Body Shop. I like the brown colour though, which I wouldn't normally use but will look at again.

Was there any smell? No

Did the mascara have the desired effect on lengthening lashes? It did lengthen- I have to give it that.  It grew some lashes for me- I've got short ones!

Did you test the "Waterproof" side of this mascara? I put it on and rinsed my face but didn't use it in the shower. It didn't budge at all after rinsing- I would imagine it would be fine on the beach if you were taking a splash!

How difficult was the mascara to take off? Very difficult to get off, which is probably a good thing during the day as you want it to be long lasting. I think it broke my lashes though taking it off at night. It took a lot of rubbing. It didn't hurt but I was conscious of how long it took to take it off.

Could you take it off with just soap and water? Probably, but I wouldn't like to try it. I ended up using an oil based eye make up remover having tried just cleanser. Definitely wouldn't use tissues or anything- would have to use cotton wool as it's a harsh process.

If not removed at night, would mascara last another day? Yes. But it would get crumbly. I tried this and my eyes got itchy, I rubbed my eyes and ended up like a panda.

Did you think the mascara was value for money? It's about middle of the road. I wouldn't say either way- not a bargain but doesn't break the bank.

Would you use it again? No

Were there any disadvantages to using this product? The eye is such a delicate area, all that rubbing couldn't be good for it. I would rather get my eye lashes tinted or maybe use false eye lashes.

Did the product do what it said on the tin? Yes. Maybe it would be ideal for a swimmer or sportsperson in the water a lot.

Would you recommend this product to your friends? No

Rating out of 10: 6/10

Notes:-
The wand on the mascara wasn't great, it wouldn't be very moist coming out of tube.

Panellist 4: Jeanna Gallagher

Product: Lancome "Hypnose" Waterproof
€25.50 for 6ml

Do you normally wear mascara? Yes but not really fussy about what kind.

What products have you tried? I've used the Maybelline ones, and at the minute I love the YSL 'extra long'.

How did you find the look of the mascara? I found it fine. It wasn't clumpy and went on nicely. I tried it both day and night and liked it as a mascara.

Was there any smell? No, none

Did the mascara have the desired effect on lengthening lashes? I think it did. It was definitely a nice mascara to use.

Did you test the "Waterproof" side of this mascara? I did, I used it in the gym and in the shower. It was fine in the gym but when I came out of the shower I had racoon eyes. Would be fine if you were out in the rain but maybe not swimming. It wasn't exactly 100% waterproof.

How difficult was the mascara to take off? It was fine to take off. I used simple eye make up remover wipes. I also used cotton wool and normal remover and it was fine. It didn't take any eyelashes out!

Could you take it off with just soap and water? I've got really sensitive eyes so I wouldn't try it.

If not removed at night, would mascara last another day? I think it would smudge, you would have panda eyes.

Did you think the mascara was value for money? No, I don't think so- I thought was a nice mascara but €25.50 is very expensive.  The other mascara I use is very luxurious and conditions eyelashes so I can justify it but this was too dear for what it was.

Would you use it again? I don't think so- especially if I specifically wanted a waterproof one.

Were there any disadvantages to using this product? No, it's a lovely mascara- I just wouldn't buy it again. The fact that it wasn't 100% waterproof

Did the product do what it said on the tin? It did say it was waterproof and I don't think it was 100% so.

Would you recommend this product to your friends? I'd recommend it as a mascara but not the waterproof end of it.

Rating out of 10: 8/10

Notes:-
I docked marks for the price & the fact it wasn't 100% waterproof. I would recommend it though for someone with sensitive eyes.
