Spring House and Garden Show - DUNCAN STEWART

Tuesday, 4 March 2008

Award winning architect, specialist in ecological design and energy, Duncan has been creative director of the Spring House and Garden Show since its inception in 2002

Duncan Stewart, Award winning architect, specialist in ecological design & energy and presenter of RTÉ One's About The House.

Duncan has always been very committed to environmental and heritage issues, especially regarding the protection of Dublin's architectural heritage. During his student years, this interest culminated in a number of protests. In 1969 and 1970, Duncan led a group of students who occupied seven old Georgian buildings on Hume Street at Stephen's Green for over 6 months, in order to prevent them from being demolished to make way for a more modern office block

THE SPRING HOUSE AND GARDEN SHOW - RDS 7TH - 9TH MARCH
Award winning architect, specialist in ecological design and energy, Duncan has been creative director of the Spring House and Garden Show, since its inception in 2002.
Now in its 6th year, Spring House and Garden signifies the start of the annual home improvement season. The three day show offers a huge variety of features, combined with a wide selection of exhibitors and a high calibre of some 30,000 visitors.
Spring House and Garden has four key areas of interest - Interiors, Garden, Build-It and EcoBuild. This year Expo-Events are proudly introducing the Irish Times Motor Live* feature (the first of its kind since 1989).
Said Duncan, 'The message is simple. We Know that oil prices are rising and will continue to do so and we know the effects of greenhouse gas emissions on the environment and therefore we have to get prepared. From increasing insulation and enhancing air-tightness to heat recovery ventilation and using solar energy - 'future proofing' is a necessity, not a choice. There is a wealth of information and advice there for the taking at Spring House and Garden 2008.'

Duncan will focus on Future Proofing our homes.
Our environment has reached a changing point. Our homes face a daunting challenge in terms of energy security, rising costs of fuel and electricity and our Greenhouse Gas Emissions. We can no longer rely on cheap energy, 92% of Ireland's energy is imported. 27% of our green house emissions comes from the home. The price of a barrel of oil is already $100 and this will double over the next five years. Electricity will rise in cost in proportion to oil and gas.

To maintain comfort and healthy environment in our homes we need to future-proof our existing homes - this means:

. Insulation (most important): Roof, Walls, Floor.
. Windows and glazing.
.  Draught sealing and air tightness
. Controlling ventilation and good air quality
. Improving heating system efficiency and controls.
. Replacing heating fuels with renewable energy - solar collectors, wood pellet boilers and stoves, heat pumps etc
. Energy efficient lighting - CFL's and LED bulbs.
. Electric Appliances - A Rated.
. Micro Wind Turbine and PV Collectors
