Random Acts Of Kindness - Mark Gaughan

Tuesday, 18 December 2007

We take a look at another selfless individual, deserving of a Random Act Of Kindness!

Mark Gaughan, 17, from Kildare, has been nominated by his sister Liz Murphy, for taking on the primary care of their brother Brendan.

Three years ago Mark's brother Brendan (age 30) had an accident at work accident, which resulted in him being quadriplegic and confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Brendan is now fully dependent on others.

At the time, Mark was like any other teenage lad, enjoying sport, music and going out with his friends, shortly after the accident, Mark took it upon himself to look after Brendan and all his needs, which resulted in him giving up his hobbies.

A very strong bond developed between the brothers and Brendan became more and more dependent on Mark. This resulted in Mark leaving school at 16 and devoting his time to looking after Brendan.  As well as being his constant companion, Mark feeds Brendan when required; he lifts him in and out of bed with the aid of a hoist. He checks and attends all hospital appointments; he feels that it is his natural duty to look after his brother.

Mark has a keen interest in rap music and has written a song about his family. With thanks to THE CAULDRON STUDIOS, Mark will spend time in a Dublin recording studio, working on his song and having it professionally produced. The Cauldron Studios is one of Ireland's top studios and the studio choice for many national and international artists. Clients include U2, The Chieftains, Mary Black, and Westlife. It was set up by Bill Shanley and Ciaran Byrne and opened in the year 2000. Located in the heart of Dublin's city centre, The Cauldron was built and designed from concept to completion: the perfect recording environment.
