Chris Hill's Christmas Dinner Wines

Friday, 14 December 2007

Chris Hill has the four perfect wines for your Christmas dinner from starter to dessert.

1.
Name   Dr. Loosen Riesling
Producer  Ernie Loosen
Vintage  2006
Country & Region Germany/Mosel
Grape Varieties Riesling

Tasting Notes: Riesling is all we grow at Dr. Loosen. It is such a versatile grape variety that it never ceases to amaze us. In addition to its unmatched ability to capture the essence of a vineyard's terroir, Riesling is one of the few grapes that is capable of producing a complete spectrum of wine styles, from bone dry to monstrously sweet.
Food Matches :This is a versatile food wine that marries well with a broad range of flavors.  With salmon as a starter or with an offbeat dish of duck breast in a savory and spicy sauce.

Interesting Stories: The Dr. Loosen estate has been in the same family for over 200 years. When Ernst Loosen (pronounced loh-zen) assumed ownership in 1988, he realized that with ungrafted vines averaging 60 years old in some of Germany's best-rated vineyards, he had the raw materials to create stunningly intense, world-class wines.

3.
Name   Pongracz
Producer   J.C. Le Roux
Vintage  Non Vintage
Country & Region Stellenbosch, South Africa
Grape Varieties 60% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay.

Tasting Notes: Light straw-coloured with a greenish tint, this sparkling wine has a good mousse and a persistent bead. Classical yeast and biscuit character on the nose with a full fruit and acid balance on the palate with a lingering aftertaste

Food Matches: A perfect complement to light dishes, seafood
Interesting Stories: Pongraz Cape Sparkling is named after Desiderius Pongrácz, a nobleman and refugee from the Hungarian uprising. He had a  genius for seeing the new in the familiar, finding the unexpected in the traditional. His theories were fresh, provocative - not only on vines and wine, but also music, history and winemaking. His wisdom on wine and cultivars revitalized viticulture at the Cape.
