MICHAELS HALLOWEEN MOVIE MADNESS
Our resident movie critic Michael has some movies that will give you the heebee jeebies!
30 DAYS OF NIGHT (16)
Opens Oct 25th @ IFI Horrorthon and Nationwide Thurs Nov 1st
Courtesy: Eclipse Pictures
Starring: Josh Hartnett, Melissa George
Director: David Slade
Verdict: I'm not usually a fan of vampire movies but this one is a cracker. Set in an Alaskan town about to be plunged into darkness for one month (handy if you're a vampire, that), the film is beautifully shot and well played by Hartnett and former Home and Away alumnus George. It's also the perfect film for Halloween as audiences may well find themselves seeking the sanctuary of the back of the cinema seat.
EASTERN PROMISES (18)
Courtesy: Pathe
Starring: Viggo Mortensen, Naomi Watts
Director: David Cronenberg
Verdict: This one will have tested the censor's blue pencil as it's an extremely violent but extremely well made thriller centred on the Russian mafia in London. Mortensen is terrific as the icy hit-man, rising through the ranks of the underworld, while Watts scores well as a local nurse who comes into contact with this nefarious world. Mortensen deserves a medal for one particular sequence (that took one week to shoot) in which he fights off a brace of baddies while finding himself naked in a bath-house.
FAMILY MOVIE ON TV OVER HALLOWEEN
CASPER
RTE2 Bank Holiday Monday 2pm
Entertaining kids movie, based on the famous comic strip, with young Christina Ricci bonding with the friendliest ghost in the world. Bill Pullman co-stars, but the humans play second fiddle to the ghostly special effects.
