Gary Kavanagh, Celebrity hair stylist
Gary is unquestionably one of Ireland's best-known hair stylists. In addition to his role as creative director of Peter Mark, he also looks after the locks of some of the country's best-known celebrities as well as ensuring many international celebrities look their finest while visiting. Having begun his training with Peter Mark many years ago, Gary has risen through the ranks to become Director of Training himself. He has handled practically every major fashion show in Ireland and has worked with supermodels Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Jerry Hall and Kate Moss. As well as this Gary also devotes much of his time to styling the stars such as Westlife, Boyzone and Denise Van Outen.
. If you are colouring your hair, don't leave it till the last minute before you go away, about a week before hand is ideal. This gives you a chance to condition the hair as it is always a bit sensitive after colour application.
. Ask your hairdresser for an up to date analysis of your hair type, and to recommend the correct shampoo/conditioner for that type. As hair changes from time to time, you could be using the wrong shampoo for your hair type.
. Gary recommends Redken hair cleansing cream €15 to remove a build up of products in your hair before you leave.
. He also recommends the Kerastase 'Soleil' range including the "UV defense cream" and "protector voile", both priced at €23.60 each
. Keep your hair covered whenever possible (Gary will go into detail here to explain about it being the WIND and not the SUN taking the colour out of your hair).
. Never use oil based products on your hair whilst in the sun, it will "FRY "
. Avoid Gels and hairsprays; a lot of these types of products contain resins or fast drying properties, so they can have the effect of "BAKING "in the heat.
. For use while on holiday Gary recommends VO5 Texturising Gum €5.15 as a holiday styling product as it doesn't contain resin.
. Gary also recommends Tresemmé Conditioning cream €4.65 and "Tresemmé protective spray" €5.85, which is good for use with hot styling products.
. When you get back from your holiday, check for split ends etc. We tend to torture our hair a bit on holiday, and also when the weather is good at home, so a trim upon return is a priority.
. A good intensive care moisturising treatment should replace some of the moisture stripped from your hair by the wind and sun on holiday. Lack of moisture is the biggest problem with summer hair.
. ALWAYS follow manufacturer's instructions, read the label and do exactly what it says. Leaving conditioners/treatments in for hours does not work; in fact you can undo the benefits.
. Gary recommends Redken UV "Rescue" shimmering defence €22 as an emercengy repair for dried out hair.
. His "TOP TIP" is Bumble and Bumble's 'Hair Powder' €39.50 available in brown and blonde for when you've just returned from holiday and don't want to wash your hair too often to try and return hair to its normal routine.
Redken "Hair Cleansing Cream" clarifies and works to remove copper, iron, hard water minerals and styling product build-up on all hair types. Formulated with fruit acids to add shine, it purifies and refreshes hair. Alternate with your regular shampoo. Apply to wet hair, massage into lather. Rinse. Repeat if necessary. For excessive build-up, leave in 5-10 minutes. Rinse.
Kérastase "Voile protecteur" is transparent high protection haircare for hair exposed to the sun, sea and chlorinated water.
Apply before and during exposure to the sun. Spray about 4 to 8 pumps depending on the hair length onto the hair. Re-apply regularly
Kerastase "Crème UV Défense Active" (UV defense cream) is a multi-protection cream with UV filters for reinforced sun protection.
Apply 2 -3 hazlenut-sized amounts of product to dry hair before exposure to the sun or swimming in the sea or pool. Massage into the hair using the fingertips. Re-apply after swimming
VO5 "Texturising Gum" is perfect for adding definition and smoothness. The non greasy formulation makes it perfect for all hair types, especially fine and flat hair. The most versatile of all styling products, VO5 Texturising Gum can be used on long sleek hair to smooth, on curls to define as well as being ideal for short choppy styles
Redken "UV Rescue Shimmering Defense" is an intense, lightweight, protective leave-in conditioning treatment. It helps protect color treated hair while delivering deep conditioning moisture and sparkling shine
Apply after shampooing on towel dried hair. Do not rinse. Style as usual. Reapply throughout the day as needed
Bumble & Bumble "Hair Powder" adds a sexy va-va volume, extends the life of a blow-dry by absorbing excess oil and provides a dry texture that keeps pins and clips from slipping (so styles stay put). The shades enhance or shift hair color. It can also be used to blend away roots between color appointments. Shake Hair Powder and spray from 10-12 inches away onto dry hair. Let dry; shake out excess with fingers and style. Or, brush thoroughly to absorb oil and dry cleanse.
