What a Difference a Day Makes - Karen Scully Part One

Wednesday, 20 September 2006

It's week two of our What A Difference A Day Makes extravaganza and this week we have a very deserving viewer in the hot seat. She lives a clown's life, dressing up everyday in full clown costume to make other people laugh. Now it's her turn to smile.

The Afternoon Show has asked our viewers to write in asking for the ultimate makeover, nominating their friends or family to have a make over with a difference. This year we are taking the classic makeover one step further across a 24 hour time span to allow for many more of the cosmetic treatment and procedures available. Let the games begin!

About Karen
Karen Scully is a 36-year-old clown in need of a make-over. She is very amicable and chatty and feels she hasn't really grown up. She still dresses the same as she did as a teenager and describes her style as casual. She would love to be a girly girl, but does not know how. Karen would like a sophisticated, grown- up look far removed from the clown.

As a clown, Karen is required to smile and laugh a lot, but is quite conscious of her stained, off- colour teeth. She is also beginning to show the first signs of ageing around the eyes and says she has bags and fine lines. She is a borderline size 10, but sometimes needs a 12 and although quite slim, is conscious of localised fatty areas on the upper arm.

As a clown, she is required to make-up her face with grease paint, which aggravates her adult acne, leaving her skin dull, uneven and congested. She only gets her hair done twice a year- highlights and a trim- so regularly has dark roots.

Karen just got engaged two weeks ago to her loving boyfriend Sean Duggan of 3 1/2 years. She is over the moon!

The Treatments
9 am - Bellaza Clinic - Endermologie body sculpting treatment.

Recommended by Wayne Rooney's girlfriend, Colleen Mc Loughlin,
Endermologie attacks the cause of cellulite at a deep tissue level, rather than simply smoothing the surface of the skin. For the new 45 minute treatment, clients are dressed in a cotton body-stocking and the areas affected by cellulite are massaged up and down by the beauty therapist, using a hand-held roller containing a powerful vibrating vacuum pump.

The process stretches and weakens the fibrous tissues attached to the layers of skin under the surface and so breaks down the fat cells. It also detoxifies by stimulating localised blood and lymph circulation, and increases production of collagen and elastin, which make the skin more flexible and supple.
Endermologie is a unique, non-invasive way of shaping your body, reducing the appearance of cellulite and improving overall skin fitness.
In its original form Endermologie was used to rehabilitate scars, burns and damaged muscular tissue when a surprising side-affect was discovered - the reduction of cellulite and significant inch loss from the body.

10 am - Bellaza Clinic - Bioskin Micropeel
This is an A-Listers pampering anti aging procedure! It's new, it's painless, it's pampering, it's acid-free - and it has worked for Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow. Bio-Skin Micro-Peel exfoliates intensively with tiny oxide crystals and infra-red light therapy, then plumps up the complexion with ultrasound vacuum massage, all within 45 minutes. The treatment is perfect for sun-damaged, lined and wrinkled skin; age spots, enlarged pores and pigmentation marks; acne and acne scarring; stretch marks and generic scarring. It's also ideal for anyone unwilling to undergo existing chemical or laser treatments due to the high cost, potential side-effects, discomfort and long recovery periods. And unlike injectables and acid peels, Bio-Skin Micro-Peel is pleasant, comfortable and relaxing.
What exactly is Bio-Skin Micro-Peel?
It's a three-step rejuvenating process which combines hi-tech skin exfoliation, a safe, painless infra-red laser light to erase the very top, fine layer of the epidermis, and a moderate 'ultrasound' suction and calibration massage which improves vascular and lymphatic circulation.
Where do the oxide crystals come in?
Clinical investigations started in Italy in 1987 showed that microdermabrasion using oxide or 'corundum' crystals is safe, effective and easy to use. Next to diamonds, corundum is one of the hardest minerals in the world and its crystals are able to gently but effectively remove micro-layers of the epidermis in a very controlled way.
Why is the treatment considered so effective?
Beauty therapists worldwide now prefer Bio-Skin Micro-Peel to surgical laser and acid peels. A number of published studies in consumer and medical periodicals have proven the benefits of the treatment and it has received excelled reviews in Vogue, Marie Claire, Top Sante, Company, Sunday Times Style section and the Daily Telegraph.
Are there any side effects?
Treatments on thousands of clients of different race and colour show no adverse skin reactions. A mild redness may occur for a few hours but desensitising formulations are also applied to the skin to soothe it. Skin texture is improved visibly after the very first treatments and continues to improve throughout the course.

11.30 am -Teeth Whitening - St Anne's Dental Surgery
What causes my teeth to darken?
Adult teeth are not normally bright white but more of a creamy white/yellow.
As we age our teeth naturally become darker in appearance. Our teeth can also become stained due to smoking, drinking tea, coffee and red wine. Illness too can affect the colour of our teeth as can the use of certain antibiotics in childhood.
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening involves applying a solution of hydrogen peroxide (bleach) to the outside surfaces of the teeth. As the peroxide penetrates the teeth they become lighter in colour. Teeth whitening have been popular in the US for decades. However, the last five years has seen a growing demand for teeth whitening in Ireland.
Most people choose to have their teeth whitened for cosmetic reasons, for a brighter, whiter smile. However, teeth whitening, in certain circumstances, can be used as cheaper and less painful alternative to veneers.
What does the procedure involve?
Before your teeth are whitened you should have a dental exam to ensure that your teeth are free of decay and leaking fillings and that your gums and mouth are healthy. Your dentist will also investigate why your teeth are discoloured in the first place.
Home bleaching
Home bleaching using 3% hydrogen peroxide and a specially constructed tray is economical, convenient and produces equivalent results to other techniques. Ideally it should be carried out under the supervision of a dentist. This treatment is available in Ireland for approximately €350.
Before beginning treatment your dentist will record the shade of your teeth. This is necessary to monitor progress of bleaching. He will then advise the correct choice of bleaching kit and make a clear plastic mouth tray like a mouth-guard to fit your mouth.
Is it safe?
The sale of teeth whiteners in the EU is actually against the law. EU law does not permit the sale of products containing more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide; teeth whitening products typically contain 3% and higher. However, teeth whitening kits containing 3% hydrogen peroxide (bleach) have a long-term safety record.
Using a higher concentration of peroxide, using too much peroxide or leaving the bleach on the teeth for too long can cause irreversible damage to your teeth, mouth and gums. For these reasons it is always advisable that teeth whitening always be carried out under the supervision of a dentist.
Is it suitable for everyone?
Teeth whitening may not be suitable for you if:
. You already have crowns or bridges as their colour will not lighten when bleached. White fillings may need to be repaired or replaced after whitening for the same reason.
. You are pregnant
. You smoke and drink alcohol as high doses of hydrogen peroxide can make you more vulnerable to the harmful effects of smoking and alcohol.
Are there any side-effects?
The commonest side effect of bleaching is tooth sensitivity. This can be prevented before bleaching by using toothpaste for sensitive teeth for two to three weeks before the procedure. If the teeth are very sensitive either during or after bleaching the dentist may recommend applying special desensitising toothpaste to the teeth on a tray for between 10 to 30 minutes. Some people complain of gum irritation and a chemical taste in the mouth. Asking your dentist to make up a proper fitting tray for your mouth will decrease the chance of peroxide leaking on to the gums and causing irritation.

Fake Tan when at home - The Tips
. Always exfoliate beforehand paying particular attention to hands, feet, knees and elbows, and moisturise very well especially those dry patches.
.  Its good to paint finger and toe nails to protect and avoid staining.
.  Use gloves or mits to avoid orange palms! You know its always a killer!
. To achieve natural looking hands and feet use only what's left over on your hands or gloves as dryer skin areas really absorb the colour.
. If you plan to sleep in it then wear your oldest PJs or tracksuit.
. Use a buffing cloth to remove heavy residue before dressing (this should be at least 20 minutes after application so tan is entirely dry).
. To maintain the tan for as long as possible use a tan enhancers and plenty of moisturiser - twice a day if possible.
