The lovely Ken Doherty was our Man Friday!
Ken made his first century break at 13 and was 17 when he scored his first 147.
Ken became the first world snooker champion from the Republic of Ireland in 1997. Ken is also affectionly known as 'Crafty Ken,' and 'The Darlin' of Dublin.'
Ken has the distinction of being the only player ever to have won both the amateur and Professional World Championships.
Ken was born in Holles Street Hospital in 1969. He is one of a family of four.
He attended Westland Row Christian Brothers School. It was during these early formative years that the first seeds of a glittering career were planted.
He will say how he was given his first snooker cue at age ten but wasn't allowed into the local snooker club so he had to wait until his older brother would take him on Sundays. He woke up on Christmas morning to find a little 2 x 1 table at the bottom of the bed. He says by lunch time that day he knew he was good at the game.
Dedication, practice, ability and self discipline are good points to become a good player, Ken says.
Ken's string of successes as an amateur proved his ability and tenacity and he turned professional in 1990. However, it took him until 1993 and the Welsh Open for him to win his first ranking title. He is renowned as a tough opponent and he became the winner of the 1997 World Championship. At The Crucible where he proved to himself and his critics that he could produce the goods when he beat Stephen Hendry 18 -12 in the final to claim the trophy.
This made him the first player ever to win both the world amateur and the world professional championships. He is hailed as a national and local hero and earned a rapturous reception on his return to Dublin with the world trophy. He was also cheered on by a crowd of 55,000 at Old Trafford when he paraded the trophy at the grounds of his favourite football team, Manchester United.
The lovely Ken is now guaranteed to travel to the World Championship at the Crucible next month; third in the provisional world rankings having leapfrogged Ronnie O'Sullivan.
