Turn Back Time- Just For Men

Friday, 28 October 2005

It's not just the ladies that worry about looking older.  Irish men are becoming increasingly into their beauty care and treatments.  Today we have Triona McCarthy will be here talk about anti-aging treatments for men.

Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus - You've heard it a million times already.  But we are very different, from the tip of our toes to the tip of our nose, quite literally as men's skin varies slightly from a woman's in its make-up.  Every day wear combined with a daily shaving routine means the skin is exfoliated by literally scraping the skin during the process. The skin is often left chaffed and irritated and prone to ageing.

However, Irish men are becoming more aware of the importance of a healthy skincare and grooming regime and the damaging effects of not having one. There's no longer a stigma about spending money on looking good, men are interested in trying new products and finding out how to look their best and realising the link between looking good and feeling good.

When it comes to skin men are thicker than women!!  Men's skin is a fraction thicker than women's, with stronger, thicker facial hair which produces more oil (sebum).  This excess oil can block the pores and cause blackheads and spots if the skin is not kept clean.  There is also the problem of in-growing hairs on the face and neck, caused when hairs grow back on themselves leaving nasty bumps, spots and even scarring.  A simple skin care routine will help to keep skin clean and healthy and will go a long way to preventing early ageing.

Saving Face

What causes wrinkles or skin folds as they call them in 'beauty-speak'?  Well, chronological age isn't as big a deal as lifestyle!  You see, sun exposure ages you a lot faster than birthdays do.  Skin's cell-renewal process slows with age, as does collagen production, leading to blotchiness and sagging.  You need to pay attention to four basic things in your daily routine; Cleansing, exfoliation, moisturising, and sun protection.  None of these steps will change your appearance dramatically.  But if you don't do them, the years will show a way faster.
Working Out Your Skin Type
While all men are created equal - all skin isn't.
. Dry skin is often sensitive, tight and uncomfortable with fine pores and a tendency toward dryness and rarely breaks out.
. Oily skin is shiny with blackheads on the nose and forehead, large, visible pores and frequently breaks out.
. Combination/Normal skin is relatively problem free, maybe a little dry and a little oily in certain areas.
To determine your skin type, wash your face and pat dry.  Wait for an hour, and then press a tissue to your forehead, cheeks, chin and nose. If your face is not shiny and there's no oily residue on the tissue, you have normal skin.  If your face looks/feels tight or is flaky and there is no oily residue on the tissue, you have dry skin.  If your face is shiny and the tissue reveals an oily residue, you have oily skin.  Many people have combination skin: the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) is oily but the cheeks are normal or dry.
Cleaning your face
Cleaning your face is different from cleaning your body.  Use a facial cleanser suited to your skin type, as they are chock-a-block with all sorts of cool herbs and enzymes.  Soap makes the skin dry, and scrubbing your face under a scorchingly hot shower creates red thread veins.  Soap is a harsh detergent with many containing deodorants and antibacterial chemicals.  These are okay for the furry parts of your body, but you should never use them on your face!
Try Lancôme Homme Gel Nettoyant Reveil (that's Invigorating Cleansing Gel to you and me).  This prepares the skin for a close shave while eliminating toxins, impurities and excess oils. Shiseido Cleansing Foam €20 deep cleanses without drying skin and may be used as shaving foam also.

A couple of times a week, use a gentle face scrub or exfoliator, basically liquid sandpaper, in order to get sluggish circulation on the move, slough off dead cells and helps keep spots at bay. Try L'Oreal Skin Renovator €8.79 available nationwide.
This exfoliating cleanser with a formula inspired by professional micro derm-abrasion techniques to dislodge impurities deep down, unclogs pores, sloughs off dead skin cells and refines skin texture. The results are skin is renewed and the complexion is brightened. Also use Lancôme Homme Men's Scrub €25.50 - Available nationwide.

Use a moisturiser and make sure it contains a SPF, even during dull and dreary winter days.  Winter sun is especially dangerous because it's intensified when reflected off white snow for example.  Unless you want your skin to go the way of the ozone layer, don't go out without it.
Men are particularly vulnerable to sun damage after shaving.  Two to three layers of skin are shed whilst shaving so shave in the evening during the summer months.  Don't use a scrub or an alcohol-based aftershave prior to sun exposure as this will lead to hyper pigmentation spots on your skin.
Try Emulave for men daily face protection, €19.95 with SPF 15, protects the skin against the elements.  Men suffering from minor skin irritations or common attacks of razor burn and sun damage, as well as more serious dry skin conditions like dermatitis and eczema, will benefit from using this range.  It contains no common skin irritants: no perfume, no alcohol, no colourings and is free from lanolin, formaldehyde, parabens and SLS (Sodium Laureth Sulphate). All known triggers for problem skin conditions.
Wrinkle De-Crease by L'Oreal containing Boswelox, €14.99, is another good buy. From the age of 35 onwards, signs of ageing begin to set in: the first expression lines appear.  This fluid emulsion enriched with a skin-tautening agent works to smooth the skin to visibly reduce the appearance of wrinkles, apparently.
Or try Shiseido's Total Revitalizer, €60, a high performance anti-aging cream.  Regular use will optimise the skin's innate revitalizing functions, eliminating dullness while providing 24 hour moisture conditioning.
Men are also more likely to develop lip cancer than women as women wear lipstick and most men don't.  To even the odds, use a lip balm with an SPF of 15 or higher when you're outside like Clinique Skin Supplies for Men.  Lip Balm SPF 15-Hydrating formula soothes dry, chapped lips and protects with SPF 15.
Chapped lips are painful to look at, but even worse to kiss!  It's not a good look so don't even consider going out on a windy day without some pucker protection.  The skin on the lips is extremely delicate, so it is most important to treat the area with care! For badly chapped lips, exfoliate by gently brushing lips with a soft toothbrush to remove flaky and dry skin. Finally, dab some balm or even a little olive oil on to soothe and soften smackers.
The eyes are also particularly vulnerable to premature ageing because the skin in this area is fine and delicate.  The muscles around the eyes are used all the time for facial expression and the skin covering them can eventually become deeply lined.  Get a good eye cream, Clarins Men's Under Eye Serum, €18, contains light diffusers which minimise dark circles.  It also helps to firm and reduce puffiness.

Known as "the underground favorite of socialites and celebrities.",  Celex - C has The Anti-Aging Kit which is designed as a once-a-day regimen.  In the morning use all three Cellex-C products in a 3-step combination.  The Anti-Aging Kit brings together three key Cellex-C products to create a powerful sun defense: High-Potency Serum 15ml, Hydra 5 B-Complex 15ml, Sun Care SPF 30+ 30ml.
Try not to frown, and wear sunglasses in the sun and outside only!
Facial Routine

Integrating a facial routine into your morning is easy.  Keep the cleanser and scrub in the shower next to your razor and wash your face before washing your body.  Lash on the moisturiser first thing after stepping out of the shower, when freshly shaven and a little, damp.
Daily Life Treatments for Youthful Skin
. Stop Smoking - It is possibly the worst thing you can do to your skin. If it doesn't kill you first, it will certainly make you look at least 10 years older.
. Eat a healthy diet and drink plenty of water as dehydration is really bad for your skin.  Aim for eight large glasses a day.
. Get sufficient sleep and try to relax.
. Stress really shows on your face and can damage the skin if it continues over a long period.

For the DIY enthusiasts, have a go at home treatments.  Dermatologists love cleansers that contain glycolic acid, because it does double duty: cleaning and providing mild chemical exfoliation to soften fine lines.  This boosts collagen, smoothes skin making it appear firmer.
