GARDEN TIPS WITH EUGENE - INDOOR PLANTS FOR THE WINTER

Eugene Higgins is here to give us tips as to which plants suit different rooms in the home or office throughout the winter months.
There are up to 800 volatile chemicals swirling around indoors.  The cold weather has forced us to insulate our houses better and so trap the chemicals inside.  This can make people ill.  It's a condition called Sick Building Syndrome. (The way houses were built in the 70s)  Carpets, photo-copy machines, manufactured wood, cleaning products, adhesives, gas stoves, desks, shelving - all contain damaging chemicals in our houses and offices and in-adequate ventilation means that we are breathing them into our system.  Different plants can recycle stale air and purify it indoors.
On average, we spend about 25 years in our bedroom.  It's recommended that there should be 2/3 plants in 27 sq metres of room to create good air quality.  It's vital to remember though that dry air indoors can kill plants so we should spray misting moisture onto them.

TOP TIPS
. To check if your plants are in need of watering, place a pebble on top of the soil.  If when you turn the pebble over the underside is dry then the plant needs to be watered.
. Save the water from boiling eggs.  It is filled with minerals and excellent for your plants.
. To keep plants watered while you are away fill the bath (use basin for demo) with about one inch of water.  Place a thick bath towel on top, then stand plants on towel to take up water as required.
. Constant watering from a saucer under a plant will bring nutrients up to the surface.  This can mean that the bottom half of the plant is not receiving sufficient nutrients and the roots can burn out.  Try to water the plant from each end with water that is not too cold.
