Breathing Space - The Fertile Rock

The third programme The Fertile Rock features The Burren in Co. Clare which in 1979 was often seen by the casual visitor as an interesting mass of grey rock. The programme instead reveals it to be a botanist's paradise. Fergus meets Brian and Noreen Mooney who set up a perfumery there; has a go at hand-milking a goat with local farmer Tom McCarthy, visits the Ailwee Caves and takes a trip to the town of Lisdoonvarna which was deserted because of the petrol shortages at the time.

The series is presented by Fergus O'Gorman, who at the time was scientific advisor for national parks. Other programmes in the series let viewers take a trip back in time and enjoy the experience of the great outdoors - the gentle flow of a barge on the river Barrow, hear the folklore and stories told about seals in the west of Ireland and Scotland; join a group of Belfast school children on a field trip to the Ulster Museum or a couple relocating from England searching for the "good life" on Cape Clear. The third programme The Fertile Rock features The Burren in Co.
