Elizabeth Cooney
Described by Martin Lovett of the Amadeus Quartet as 'extraordinarily gifted', spotted by Tully Potter of the Strad as 'a talent to watch' and credited for her 'remarkable virtuosity' by Ian Fox on the release of her first CD of Romantic repertoire last year, Elizabeth has emerged as one of the most exciting and dynamic young artists of her generation.
Elizabeth studied in Cork with Adrian Petcu and then with Itzhak Rashkovsky at the Royal College of Music, London. While there she scooped many awards including the Seymour Whinyates Prize for Strings and the Ian Stoutzker Award for Violin.
Selected as the National Concert Hall Ireland's Rising Star 2006, her concerto performances have brought collaborations with conductors Alexander Anissimov, Paavo Jarvi, Shlomo Mintz and Laurent Wagner among others. Elizabeth's performances at the Wigmore Hall and Royal Festival Hall in London and at the Victoria Hall, Geneva, have been highly critically acclaimed. In early August 2007, she performed with the Ulster Orchestra, conductor Howard Shelley, playing Mozart's Violin Concerto No.1.
In September '07, she will embark on a recital tour of Ireland with pianist Finghin Collins and '08 will see her return to the Wigmore Hall with harpist Sally Pryce as well as performing the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the St. Cecilia Orchestra under conductor Nicholas Daniel. The 2007/08 season will also see performances in New York, and throughout Europe with pianist Matthew Schellhorn, performing rarely heard works by Messiaen and recording the Quartet for the End of Time.
Last year Elizabeth released her first CD for Tzar Records, available on towerrecords.com and tzarrecords.com and on Apple iTunes. She also features on Redmond O'Toole's recently released disc for Bornheim Classics performing Rodrigo with Redmond on Brahms guitar. As well as on RTÉ Television, Elizabeth has recorded for BBC3 and Lyric FM.
Her piano trio, The Syrius, was awarded a place on Music Network's Young Musicwide Scheme and have commissioned composer Ben Dwyer to write a trio for them which will receive its premiere in September '07. Elizabeth also performs in a violin duo with Ioana Petcu-Colan.
