Nina Kati is an interior designer, feng shui consultant and trainer based in Co Waterford. In 2000 she set up her own company called Working Wonders offering a full range of advice, décor, design, shopping and sourcing services. Nina is dedicated to working with her clients to create schemes which are specifically tailored to meeting their needs - from detailed drawings right through to design implementation. Her expertise includes show homes, house designs, renovation projects, kitchens, bathrooms, ceiling features and bespoke furniture. She sums up her design style as ‘Calm, elegant and desirable’ and says ‘I don’t just transform people’s homes I transform their lives’.

Nina specialises in combining feng shui with interior design as a central theme in her work to create balance and harmony and this powerful combination makes her work rather unique. Her work attracts attention because of the concept that our immediate environment can affect our health and well-being and even shape our lives.

Having travelled extensively and lived in several countries Nina brings an international style to her work so that her interiors have universal appeal and aren’t too summery or too wintry, too feminine or too masculine, too young or too old. In areas such as kitchens and offices she places great importance on a clutter-free environment with lots of free work surfaces to promote clear thinking, quick decision-making and speed tasking. In bedrooms and bathrooms she often uses natural products and materials to promote a sense of peace and tranquility. In living spaces she tends to work on a multi sensory level in order to appeal to the senses and the emotions.

Nina’s trademark is to create an effect of subtle suggestion rather than the obvious. For styling an Irish interior she feels colour, warmth and practicality are three important considerations, and that the winter berry palette is ideal for our climate and light. She usually selects soft muted colours (such as stone, pale greens and particular shades of grey) for a gently blended background and then adds certain proportions of rich colours (burgundy, olive, grape, aubergine) and luxurious textiles (silk and velvet). The sitting room she created in the house for programme was a perfect example of this.

Nina loves finishing touches that add sparkle; she looks on accessories as ‘jewellery for the home’. She doesn’t believe in revealing everything to the eye in one glance and thinks there should be enough visual interest to hold someone’s attention for a time no matter which aspect of a room comes into view. She says ‘Aim to get the proportions and style of a space correct and then make the scheme truly outstanding by using the right balance of colour, texture and pattern’. She adds ‘Choose simple and timeless for the main aspects of an interior as it’s cheaper and more practical to update the accessories than to create a whole new scheme’.

Nina believes the home is a personal sanctuary in which to rest and rejuvenate - a healing place for mind, body and spirit. It was through her travels in the Far East and her work as an interior designer that she became interested in the ancient oriental art of feng shui which concerns the relationship between people and their homes. She subsequently trained under a Chinese master to learn the secrets of authentic feng shui and its impact on our health and well-being, relationships and family harmony, success and destiny. Her clients say she has helped them to cope better, rebound faster, overcome difficulties and become self-empowered.

Nina also works with businesses to help them develop a more positive image, improve staff morale and customer relations, promote team work and increase output, and transform public and staff areas into a more pleasant environment.

One of Nina’s most popular services is her ‘Healing Homes Makeover Day’ which involves clearing clutter, reorganising the home, and improving colour and lighting to create an optimum environment that will have a beneficial influence on the outlook and well-being of everyone at home.

Nina is on the VEC tutor panel to teach adult education classes and she also runs private one day workshops. Her courses are simple and informative, logical and easy to understand. Participants are encouraged to ask questions, and numbers are usually limited to smaller groups to ensure a high quality of delivery and the full participation of those present.
